We Won

Posted by Dan Savage on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Both chambers of the New Hampshire state legislature have now approved an amended marriage equality bill, which now heads to the desk of New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, who has already indicated that he will sign the bill. Same-sex marriage will shortly be legal in six states.

Kim, I think we have a little psychic thing going on. It's not the first time that we've experienced this weird synchronicity. "buy me a pepsi"

All this happening, while in progressive Washington, we fight off a repeal of an "everything but marriage" bill.

How sad.....

I predict we will be Number 42.

Why?

Because all the Seattle area legislators are wusses and nobody here phones them up each and every day or sends them postcards demanding they do this and asks when they will do it.

Actions speak louder than words.

@9 progressive washington? where is that. riding your bike on a freeway doesn't count as progressive.

@10 phone EVERY DAY?!

sorry, we've been too busy with pit bulls, pastors, foie gras, destroying goodwill towards cyclists, noisy trucks, PETA, mormons, pretending to run for mayor, defending child rapists, and stealing wine from the grocery store.

you know, progressive stuff.

#6-- You gotta get through Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware to get to Maryland. Not that it couldn't be done: think of all the gay mobsters, Amish bachelor farmers, and intersex call-center workers you could join in holy matrimony!

Hey, the chances are higher that my lesbian high school classmate will get our laws changed under NAFTA before we in this state do anything.

Why?

Because they know what you have to do to win.

I'm not acquainted with the numbers, but I have to agree with @11. Washington has a funny, progressive reputation, and my immediate circle is pretty liberal (I'm a little bigoted against conservatives), but (IMHO) that reputation is only skin deep. Prop 8 could easily have happened here. Washington is rarely on the vanguard of any progressive movement, and tends to follow other, braver states only when the water's been adequately tested.

Will in Seattle is probably right on. Maybe we should make bets? I wouldn't say that Washington will be so late as 42nd, since I think that would damage our precious "progressive" reputation. Once we see that it's safe, we'll pretend it was our idea all along. I'm gonna say 24th (we won't want to be in the bottom half, but will otherwise put it off as long as possible).

I'm so happy that my face is wet with tears. Seriously, my beard is soaked. This decision will never effect me personally, but it might have, if I'd been born 50 years later. Maybe Dan is right and we ARE winning. Long way to go, though.

Change starts at the bottom, and seeing how Will is a raging bottom, we're probably not going to see change for a good long time.

@ 14 --
NJ is working hard to get a bill thru the legislature, looks like it should be thru by the end of the year. Now all we have to do is make sure we don't elect a Repub. governor this fall.

That is AWESOME news!! Six states in the Union (so far) extend equal rights to ALL their citizens.. and the rest don't (yet).

C'mon, you other 44!! What the hell!! (I know it's just a matter of time and there will be some slowpokes, like, oh say Arizona.. Those guys'll get to the party probably some time in 2045 or some shit.....)

@21: Sing it Scary!

Looking forward to the day when you can add ALL the states to the lyrics. That'll really be something to sing about.

Though I'm all for celebrating the victories as we get em as well.

Let us not disparage 42...

it is, after all, the answer to the meaning of life, the Universe and Everything.
