Today In Traditional Marriage

Posted by Dan Savage on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 3:28 PM

Craigslist can't catch a break these days:

A North Carolina man is accused of arranging to have his wife raped through personal ads on the Web site Craigslist, police said Wednesday. The 25-year-old man, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred at his home early Sunday, police said in a statement.

Police responded to the home at about 2:45 a.m. after receiving a 911 call indicating a male armed with a knife appeared in the couple's bedroom and sexually assaulted the man's wife, authorities said. The man was present at the time of the assault, and two young children were in the home, but were unharmed and unaware of the incident, the police statement said.

What? No link to your writings about how the internet is great place to meet people to get your kink on?

@1 Yeah, because that's relevant ... sometimes it is best to keep your comments to yourself, otherwise you just end up sounding fairly ignorant ...

How is hiring someone to rape your wife anywhere near two consenting adults meeting on-line to get their fuck on?

Umm don't try to cover up your ignorance by accusing me of being a bad writer!

You're the one that made yourself look like an idiot, I had nothing to do with that.

Hmm... I wonder if he did this to "punish" her or if he gets turned on by someone raping his wife?

So, let's say that the rapist was told by the husband that the wife consented and the husband hatched an elaborate plan to make the wife's consent look plausible. Is the rapist a rapist? If he reasonably believed that the wife consented, is he culpable?

@12 In that hypothetical, I'd say that he's still criminally negligent for not getting proper consent. Anything other than her telling him she consents, in person, in a clearly un-coerced setting, doesn't count. (So maybe the only person who could commit a crime like that would be her identical twin).

i always love when they choose to focus on the method of communication. Craiglist will be the buzzword here.

we won't see "Email" or "Internet" or "Written Language" as the scary thing that might murder us. (although Internet isn't out of the woods yet, but people are more savvy so they now blame specific sites)

Just once i want to see something like "Man terrorizes woman via Telephone" with talking heads on TV explaining this sinister device to people and how it was used to make someone miserable.
