Today in the Weather

WHY IS THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE YELLING AT SEATTLE?!

As noted in the Morning News, they've issued a heat advisory upon us for 2 p.m. today through 6 p.m. Thursday. LOOK OUT!!!

OFFSHORE FLOW...WARM AIR ALOFT...LONG DAYS...AND A HIGH EARLY JUNE SUN ANGLE ARE COMBINING TO PRODUCE VERY WARM CONDITIONS IN THE SEATTLE-TACOMA-EVERETT AREA. DAYTIME TEMPERATURES ON TUESDAY ROSE WELL INTO THE 80S TO AROUND 90. EXPECT TEMPERATURES THIS AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY AFTERNOON TO BE ABOUT THE SAME AS TUESDAY...NEAR RECORD LEVELS.

THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT AND AN OFFSHORE BREEZE MOVING DOWN OFF THE CASCADES IS NOT ALLOWING TEMPERATURES TO COOL OFF MUCH AT NIGHT.

TAKE THAT BLANKIE OFF YOUR BED OR YOU WILL GET SWEATY!

Is 90 degrees really that hot? So hot, we need an advisory? Shouldn't they save this for 117-degree heat waves in New York? What if the midwest needs an advisory, but we used this one and there are none left?!

I leave you with a little more shouting and a few extra ampersands and dollar signs (it's like they grown on trees!) from ALBRECHT. Basically, DON'T JUMP IN A LAKE OR ELSE!!!

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND RATHER HIGH HUMIDITY CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS. STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM IF POSSIBLE.
STAY OUT OF THE SUN...AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

REMEMBER THAT AREA LAKES AND RIVERS ARE STILL COLD. ESCAPING THE HEAT BY JUMPING INTO A COLD LAKE OR RIVER CAN LEAD TO DEATH BY HYPOTHERMIA OR DROWNING.

The NWS should just go jump in a lak.. oh, wait, that's now considered a prosecutable threat.

They have to yell because you didn't listen when they quietly reminded you the coffee was hot and could burn your shameful bits if you spilled it on your lap.

It's been raining in my pits and on my forehead for days. Step outside for three minutes and my balls turn into a faucet. Glasses keep falling off. I hate it.

It's not really "yelling", it's just that NWS is still working with 1970's era teletype machines that only print in upper case.

And considering this weather is about two months early, yeah, the advisory is probably justified. After six solid months of cold, dark, gray, and wet, people around here are apt to go a bit overboard, and so a little reminder to drink lots of water and not get overheated is not a bad idea.

90 is not hot.

Jumping in a lake should be recommended, not warned against.

Don't get overheated, don't jump in a lake, WTF?

If they ever issued an advisory for a 90 degree day in Louisiana, they would be laughed at more than we already laugh at them. We've been hitting the 90's since late April, and are now in the stretch of weather that will last until early November - Hazy, hot, and humid with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. High in the mid to upper 90s, lows in the mid 70s.

That weather forecast is only broken up by days when it rains all day and hurricanes.

I grew up some of the years of my childhood where it got into the 120s in the shade.

The problem is people here aren't used to it, so they don't know what to do: open the windows, make some iced tea, and have mint juleps - and don't overexert yourself.

I've become so acclimated to Seattle weather I start whining at around the high 70s. But whatever. This too shall pass.

June is typically cool and overcast due to development of low clouds over the Pacific that linger for weeks. Cliff Mass posted about it back in April:
http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2009/04/oc…

It's highly unusual to have persistently sunny hot weather from May into June, so this is weird. And people don't know how to deal with hot weather. And you don't know how to read NWS postings, so clearly concern is called for.

Yes, 90 is really that hot when all you have is a pathetic little fan to keep you cool.

F$ck. We didn't get the room AC unit installed two weeks ago when we had my stepson (aka the House Mule) there to help with the damned thing. Now we can't sleep. Wah. I guess I'll just stay at work, at least there's AC here.

My poor cats. They're longhairs, and I haven't had time to take them to get shaved yet. They're turning into carpetkill.

My weird kids slept all bundled up last night in their beds, even though my wife and I begged them not to wrap up in their down comforters or wear long sleeved or legged stuff to bed. Since they are native Seattlites, unlike my wife and I, I'm guessing they were born without internal thermostats.

F that I jumped in Lake Washington today, it was amazing. A little cold, but not too bad.

I don't think many of you get the concept of the all-pervasiveness of AC in a lot of places where 90s are the norm. Temperatures in the 90s have been sufficient in the past to kill hundreds and thousands. I'm from Vegas, and even I consider 90 without AC to be uncomfortably hot.
