Is It Hot Enough For You, Goth?

Posted by on Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 3:34 PM

2cb7/1244055622-michael-wilson.jpgWhen I was in high school, I was friends with a kid who was so goth that he would not even take off his giant heavy gray trench coat and combat boots when he went swimming in the mighty Saco River during summer vacation. I often find myself thinking of that dumb loyalty to a dumb fashion statement, and so I really enjoy Goths in Hot Weather, a new blog. Photos are rated in both "Gothiness" and "Sweatiness." It's pretty funny.

(Note: Just because I endorse this blog now does not mean I endorse the inevitable book deal, which will net the bloggers some six figures to produce a piece-of-crap book.)

Six figures? Really? I guess I haven't put too much thought into how much a Stuff White People Like or a CakeWrecks book would actually make for the author. You are wiser than I on such topics, Paul, is that right or an exaggeration on your part?

Whatever happened to that stupid bitch Emily Gould's book? Did they give her $300k to just fancy the idea of writing it? A book about her own stupid life and tattoos and she still isn't done with it? Probably busy making shit up and being sure nobody can find out how fabricated it is.

I'm very skeptical that most of them, or really any of them, get more than $10k for an advance.

I'm not sure your example is so much a dedication to a fashion statement as it is basic adolescent insecurity. I almost feel bad for the guy, except I don't. Shirtless, leather jacket wearing rockers, on the other hand...

I still think Awkward Family Photos is better.

Ha! Found it! From the BBC2 show "Bruiser" in 2000, featuring Robert Webb (later of Peep Show) and Matthew Holness (later of The Office (UK version)).

7:00 in, Goths on the beach, discussing summer wear and outdoor swimming.

Ah, my first double post!

Was also trying to find directions on embedding the link properly but I was afraid the topic would slip down the page before I found a method that worked!

Goths are depressed hippies.

My biggest goth phase was during a Denver summer. I only went out at night, unless I was going to work.

I was Goth for like a nano-second (okay, all of high school) and in winter I wore black long sleeved shirts and black skinny jeans (yeah, they were around then). In summer I wore black t-shirts and black cut-off shorts. I thought vampires and Marilyn Manson were lame...I wasn't a very good Goth.

When did they start calling them Goths? Weren't they "batcave girls?" or "batcavers" in the 80s? Or did I just miss the memo?

@13 - Batcavers and Death Rockers. That's MY generation of Goths! I even heard them called Death Mods a few times.

I obviously need new glasses. I read the comment @10 as "Goths are depressed [inverted?] nipples."

@12: all of the goths I've ever known also think Marilyn Manson is lame. (They're split on vampires.) But he's not goth.

I think Goths In Hot Weather is from the UK, right? From what I've been told about their weather and beaches, those kids are the only sensibly dressed folks there. Best wishes.

The band New Model Army (on the nice young man's t-shirt) is not Goth. It's punk. So that fine youth in the photo is a Punk. With sunglasses.
