DOUG. 4
Sullivan writes an article titled "The Fierce Urgency of Whenever" yet twice says that Obama's been in office for six months. Get a calendar, dude.

And I love how he bitches about gay soldiers being kicked out of the military "in a time of war". Maybe we wouldn't be in a war without jackasses like Sullivan.

Otherwise, he makes some fine points...

Remember, also that Cheney said in the VP debate in 2000 that he supported civil unions. I always thought it was remarkable that it didn't get much attention, then or in the many years since.

How brave of Cheney to be pro-marriage for gay people after he left office.

"This is a civil rights movement"

It seems fitting though that Darth Cheney would want to be the new face of it though.

Obama = Cheney regarding marriage. Both are states rights people, meaning it's fine with them if every state chooses to discriminate against LGBT people (or anyone else) in marriage. Fukkers, both of 'em.

I love how Cheney says in regards to his daughter being gay that "we've been living with this for a long time". Like she's a chronic illness or something. Obama has a fine brother in states rights arms there.

@8,

You should try brushing up on Constitutional law sometime. The states get to decide this until the Supreme Court says they can't. Period. Marriage equality cannot be instituted at the federal level without a Constitutional Amendment.

Classic Cheney, says he thinks it should be a states rights issue, and yet supports DOMA & DADT.

@9 - A constitutional amendment? Loving v. Virginia ended race-based legal restrictions on marriage nation-wide. The court ruled that those restrictions violated the 14th Amendment. Should the Supreme Court ever strike down DOMA, or it is repealed, wouldn't that ensure equality in that a same-sex marriage in Iowa is recognized nationwide? Legislation akin to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 could also ensure marriage equality.

@9 What 13 said. Plus, Obama gets to nominate people to the courts. What he says about this is highly relevant, at the very least as an indication of his priorities.

@11 His unabashed support for the Iraq invasion until he found it inconvenient to do so, for one. Second, his foolish adherence to a failed laissez-faire libertarian ideology that has never worked in the real-world, and the fact that I think he's creepy, is why.

If there are enough people here to form a lynch mob to remove this misogynistic, racist, libertarian, Big Pharma whore from the gene pool, I'd be willing to pitch in money for the rope and a Starbucks Vanilla Bean Scone to jam up his ass after the deed is done. God, what an oleaginous bastard fucker. But please, after he's dead, send me his glasses, which I envy.

Ugh, I am still seeing the evil Cheney penguin..why, why? Yeah, real easy to talk about your gay daughter now, isn't it, DICK?

It's sad there isn't faster progress on DADT & DOMA, but it's probably for the good of the overall goal of equality that gay marriage isn't in front of federal courts right now. Polls still show a clear majority against gay marriage. An age-divided opinion, w/ most younger folks being pro-gay-marriage, which time is taking care of as we shout & fight. As it gets voted in, state, by state, soon it's going to be seen as really, REALLY backwater to be against it.

Matter of time.

That being said: yes, Obama's not being more direct is just making me sad. I can't decide if it's the Clintons, part II, or if he's just canny & waiting for the right moment.

If the first president of the *last* civil rights movement turns his back on the *current* civil rights movement, that's a Shakespearean level tragedy.

Sill holding out for "canny".

You're absolutely right. Obama and Chaney have the same position. If the people of this country decide that marriage is defined as being between a man and woman, than it is. They both want to sit back and let the will of the majority of Americans decide how the word is defined. Isn't that how every word develops its meaning? Makes sense to me.

#9: A Supreme Court ruling that same-sex couples have a fundamental right to marry would have nationwide effect, just like anti-miscegenation statutes were unconstitutional after Loving.

You people need to lay off #9. He/she is entirely correct. If you reread that post, it says, "The states get to decide this until the Supreme Court says they can't." That's exactly what most of you are arguing. Issues related to marriage are always state issues until they impinge on some fundamental constitutional right, as recognized by the Supreme Court. As of now, there is no Loving v. Virginia for LGBT folks. Until the Court gets involved and says that the principles identified in Loving apply to gay marriages, then the states will continue to regulate it. DOMA just gives the states the power to regulate it independent of other states by letting them ignore Full Faith and Credit in terms of this issue (which is likely a Constitutional prerogative of Congress), and says that the feds won't provide any rights.

What #9 said is right. Until and unless the Supreme Court rules on gay marriage as a question of fundamental rights, it would require a Constitutional amendment at the federal level to enact gay marriage nationwide - the feds couldn't do that statutorily in the status quo.

It's too farcical for to listen to Anderson play coy and dishonest. Would we accept a member of any other group (banker, palenstinian, WASP, whatever?) conducting such an interview on the issues affecting the group while keeping his membership in that group a secret?

Actually Andrew Sullivan's incorrect that Cheney didn't use the word marriage in that clip, he did (see 0:58).
