Today in DVD Releases

Posted by Paul Constant on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 12:31 PM

A few big releases in the world of DVD.

I did not like Sam Mendes's adaptation of Richard Yates's novel Revolutionary Road:

...the problem is that every year around Oscar season, Hollywood dresses up like average people and puts on a caricature play of suburban life, and we know the score far too well at this point. There is sad, meaningless adultery. DiCaprio and Winslet relentlessly feud—from the very beginning of the film—in the kind of screaming, snot-splattered scenes that always wind up in Best Actor and Actress montages at awards shows. And you can throw all the money in the world at this sort of thing (the costumes and sets are beautiful), but without the soul of Yates's gorgeous language, it's only so much pretty whining.

Lindy West was annoyed by the inspired-by-a-self-help-book romcom He's Just Not That Into You:

Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) is single. Harrumph! She spends most—no wait, all—of her time harrumphing, crying, rationalizing, stalking, and staring at her phone waiting for men to call back. (This behavior, the prologue tells us, is the same the world over, even in AFRICA: "I'm sure he just forgot your hut number." "Or was eaten by a lion.")

Also out today is the Daniel Craig Jews-fight-back-against-the-Holocast drama Defiance. Then there are some weird new DVDs. There's an Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Parker Posey thirtysomething-ladies-on-spring-break comedy called Spring Breakdown that apparently went straight to DVD, even though I'd swear that any movie starring those three women couldn't be totally awful. And Joss Whedon's internet super-villain musical starring Neil Patrick Harris, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog gets a non-Amazon.com-exclusive DVD release.

There are two horror films: Anacondas: Trail of Blood (who would have thought that there would be a whole series of horror movies about anacondas?) and Razortooth, about an evil eel. Biographical documentaries about subjects as diverse as Bono, Jeff Buckley, and Che are being released today, and new seasons of TV series like Reaper, Quincy, Army Wives, The Jetsons, and Weeds get their moment in the DVD sun.

You can find a full listing of releases here.

Hyzenthlayk9,

I am pretty sure Paul just pulls the data from these from the link he always provides to Hacking Netflix which in turns just lists all the DVDs that Netflixs adds to its library once a week.

Dr. H just came to Netflix today.

I didn't realize that Netflix was that slow at adding new titles.

I gave a copy to a friend for Xmas, and she had told me that she was planning on getting it through Netflix (which is why I thought it had already been added to their list). I guess she meant that she was going to rent it when it finally became available, but now doesn't have to.

Btw, be sure to check out "Commentary! The Musical" which is of course the much hailed all musical commentary track. Good stuff there too.

Didn't Ms. Ryan just do a whole big thing on Spring Breakdown at this year's SIFF?

Would SIFF show a movie that bad? Or that mainstream?

yah, netflix is a weird one when it comes to adding titles. New big name stuff they always get day of release but smaller lesser known stuff takes awhile (or after enough people have requested it) for them to carry it.

@5--Which is why it's cool there are indie video stores around town that bring the smaller, lesser known titles the day they're released.

Dr. Horrible was an Amazon exclusive title for most of this year; today it's available wherever DVDs with humorous content are sold.

I was considering watching HJNTIY on an eight-hour plane ride later this week (I knew it was supposed to be awful, but it seemed like it might be more entertaining than the five other awful options) but after reading that Africa quote I just don't think I could stand it. Even Bride Wars might be a better bet.
