Survivorman

Posted by Paul Constant on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 11:28 AM

Sherman Alexie has a poem in the print edition and online at The New Yorker. It begins:

Here’s a fact: Some people want to live more

Than others do...

It's a very short poem, and I recommend you go take a minute or two to go read it. It reminds me of some of Dorothy Parker's poetry, in a very good way.

I don't like very much poetry but I liked this one.

What's that? I couldn't hear you. Pull Alexie's dick out of your mouth before you speak.

Seriously though, does the entire Stranger staff line up to fellate Sherman Alexie every time he blesses you with his glorious presence? I imagine everywhere he walks he leaves a trail of puppies and rainbows, and his spunk tastes minty and fights plaque. Am I right?

I liked it. But it reminded me of Mary Oliver more than Dorothy Parker.

I know a man who lived through the horrors of war. He tried to get killed every day. I knew a man who was dying of AIDS back in the days before people had a name for it. He asked me how to kill himself. Life isn't always bearable.

Most of that two minutes was spent hitting the X's on the New Yorker's pop-ups for themselves.

But I dig it.
