Debris From Air France Flight 447 Found

Posted by Jonathan Golob on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 6:53 PM

Via the New York Times:

Wreckage spotted by Brazilian military planes in the Atlantic Ocean is that of missing Air France Flight 447, the Brazilian minister of defense said Tuesday afternoon at a news conference. The jet, bound for Paris from Rio de Janeiro with 228 aboard, disappeared Sunday night without any distress call.

Nelson Jobim, the defense minister, said that “without a doubt” the debris was from the Air France plane. Military planes located the wreckage in a three-mile strip in the ocean, as hope of finding survivors all but vanished.

The debris included “an orange life vest, an aircraft seat, a drum, kerosene and oil,” an earlier statement from the Brazilian military said.

The NYT also has put together one of the more beautiful figures I've seen—of such an awful event.

Check out the ETOPS map.

@4...

did they find any bottles of red wine bobbing up and down in the atlantic because i noticed one missing from QFC.

maybe erica could do some original reporting on that. don't assume Slog doesn't add value. it's also run by journalists so i'm sure they can contribute something.

the missing bottle cost $8.99.

Actually @4, I think your sequence should have been:

NYT= Incredible, well-made, factual reporting
SLOG= link to NYT + bong hit
BIAJM=

That would have been much more accurate.

and @6 an even more accurate sequence would be:

OMG - what is wrong with you people? A plane went down and you are harping on ancient (yet boring) local gossip and telling offensive jokes. I mean, I hope the cunt/shit thing was a joke.....I hope.

Not a proud day for Slog commenters.

Great Circle Mapper is one of my favorite websites; I can play on there all day. I especially like the antipodean feature. Rio's airport (named after Tom Jobim, how awesome is that?) is antipodeal to Iwo Jima, 12,124 miles away -- but Iwo's is Cabo Frio, 12,192 miles away, up the coast a little. Ours is Tolagnaro, Madagascar, a mere 10,778 miles from Sea-Tac; there's a whole lot of nothing in the open oceans.

I note with bitter amusement that wags say ETOPS stands for "engines turn or passengers swim".

I'm sure that military satellites took high resolution photos of the area, and if there is a little benevolence from their part, they could share these photos on the net, for example on google earth.

I am sure there are a lot of volunteers who are willing to examine these photos on their computers, thus increasing the chance to find parts of the plane.

Maybe on can start a webservice to collect the data from the volunteers. Maybe on can use such a system in other cases for saving lives? I'm aware of the fact that hi-res photos are useless if the weather is nasty. I just wanted to share my idea.

Either this plane was shot down or the pilot made a very stupid decision.
