Blessed Are The Blasting Caps

Posted by on Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Meet the "pro-life" activist who shot and killed George Tiller. The suspected killer's right-wing extremism wasn't limited to anti-abortion-rights activism...

But Roeder's violent right-wing extremism seems to extend beyond the issue of abortion. In April 1996, amid anxiety over the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, Roeder was stopped by police after a motorist reported seeing a car with a license plate reading: "Sovereign
— Private Property — Immunity Declared at Law — Non Commercial American."

...

When police searched Roeder's car, they found the makings of a bomb: a blasting cap; two six-volt lantern batteries, one wired with a clothespin and a cigarette wrapper; and a 1-pound can of black gunpowder. In Roeder's home, police found instructions titled "Underground Cookbook: Clothes Pin Time-Delayed Switch."

Creepiest detail:

When Roeder was arrested yesterday, he was driving a blue 1993 Ford Taurus. In the rear window of the car was a red rose—a symbol often used by anti-abortion activists—and on the back his car was a silver fish symbol with the word "Jesus" inside.

The part in the Sermon on the Mount about bomb making was always my favorite.

Dear Non-Murdering Christians Which I Know Exist,

You better start standing up and decrying these people loudly now in an organized fashion if you want to remain relevant and taken seriously in the future.

Oh. A red rose.

I read that as "nose" and wondered if there was something to this widespread fear of clowns.

Yes, yes - I know. Not funny. I don't think I can quite cope with the reality, though.

The weak, insincere language which pro-life groups have been using to condemn this guy really don't convince me that they're all that upset at him. The press release from Operation Rescue might have just as well said, "This is awful, ut-bay at-thay uy-gay is-ay a ero-hay."

I'm against housing these terrorist thugs in the U.S. Send him to Gitmo.

I don't get the red rose thing... am going to have to look that up, it's just weird.

I figure if you've gotta use a symbol to unite you (like the fish dealy on the bumper), why not a preemie baby doll in your back window? Or one of those pics they're always using of a burned fetus? What's up with the rose? Seems kind of unfocused.

Wasn't there someone somewhere decrying the assumption that this guy was a Christian extremist? Well - shut your martyrd mouth.

People are getting jailed for 15 years as "Eco-Terrorists" for blowing up SUV's in an empty lot. When will these nuts be labeled as terrorists as well, or is that labelling-discretion reserved for the FOX News crowd...

Sick of this shit. Seriously. These religious nutcases are a cancer to a free society and must be called out, not nervously avoided. No tolerance for the intolerant. No more.

@6,

It does seem creepy; it's like a serial killer's symbol. Also a single red rose is a romantic thing. Is it supposed to be a way to woo women into being brooding mares?

If extremist is 1. white 2. christian 3. right-wing then they are not a terrorist.

The whole purpose of terrorism is to instil fear into an entire group of people because they belong to that group. Murdering Dr. Tiller was done to intimidate abortion providers. That is a clearly terrorist act, and should be subject to the full penalties accorded by law to terrorist activities.

Disgusting. Just disgusting. I've been dreading Dr. Tiller's murder for years; I knew these bastards would get him sooner or later. I'm so impressed by their reverence for life, aren't you?

Did you really mean to type 'brooding mares'? (i'm suspecting you meant 'breeding mares') But I'm *very* interested to hear more if you really have knowlege of the desire to turn women into Brooders. We can take it offline, since this is not quite the appropriate place.

There was a pro-life demonstration at my school where they had a red rose for every baby aborted in a day/year just or something. They were selling them for $1 a piece to raise money.
At the end of the day they were giving away buckets cuz so few people bought them, I got a bunch and decided they were the heads of vanquished enemies.

I would love to hear someone from Operation Rescue work "uy-gay" (sounds like I gay) into a sentence. That would at least provide a little comic relief to this horrible story.

@7: Yeah, he was an unregistered user posting in the last thread on this subject.

I notice he didn't take anyone up on their offer to wager large quantities of money that this was a white, male Christian.
