Attention Seattle Art Venues: Free Pass!!

Posted by Jen Graves on Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Congratulations, Seattle museums and galleries! You're not important enough to protest!

Bring on the sex, drugs, bombs, and gays!

If it's in some dump in Seattle, why would I draw attention to it?"
—William Donohue, head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights

But it's more fun if they get all mad about it.

I like the part about artists being the first one to call Donahue up and asking him to report on the offensiveness of their art. It's kind of a great move: If every artist beats him to the punch and alerts him to their "offensive" artwork—essentially assuming the role of the whistle-blower—and if he is, as he says, choosy about creating unwanted attention toward certain works of art, he may stop doing it altogether.

Donahue wants to glory of being the whistle-blower (and the subsequent gratitude from conservatives), not a PR shill for artists, especially ones whose work offends him.

If some dumpy drunk calls a painting immoral, why should anyone care?
