Gene Cohen gives a lecture at Town Hall on aging and how it affects the brain. However, at the exact same time, Aleksandar Hemon reads from his great new book of linked short stories, Love and Obstacles, nearby at University Book Store. Based on my Suggests that will be popping up soon, it should be obvious that I think you should attend the Hemon reading.
At Third Place Books, Bryan and Bev Sparks read from Barking Buddha, which is a book about teaching yoga to your dogs. My just-retired intern, Rayne DeMartini, would like to remind you that people in the world are starving.
Gary Snyder reads at Benaroya Hall. Snyder is getting to the point in his career where the words "venerable" and "storied" are used a lot in conjunction with his name. He will read his overrated poetry.
Tacoma Public Library hosts Daniel James Brown, who is the author ofThe Indifferent Stars Above, which is about the Donner Party. And Valerie Laken reads at Elliott Bay Book Company. Dream House is a novel about houses and neighborhoods and the people who live in them.
The Hemon reading is obviously the reading of the night. With his accent and his wry, bone-dry sense of humor, he's a great reader of his own work.
The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.
