The Last Gay Post of the Day

Posted by Dominic Holden on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Many hundred people converged in Westlake Park a few hours ago to shake their fists at the California Supreme Court for upholding Prop 8. It was weird, though, because folks looked pretty happy. Except this guy, who looked like he was ready to make some Spotted Owl bisque:

He's Karl Derrick, and he's not mean at all. "The left doesn't often use the American flag," he said. "Too often it's waved to represent the bludgeoning end of America." Indeed. This next picture was taken by Nic Launceford on Flickr:

Here is state Senator Ed Murray, begging the massive gaggle to get off their metropolitan asses and organize outside the sequined walls of Capitol Hill:

Behind him to the left—Murray's right—is Representative Jamie Pedersen, who looks like an angel. And not one of those chubby little Rococo angels. A tiny little Lutheran angel. "Referendum 71 is a blessing in disguise," he says.

Spotted Owl bisque guy's flag support is made out of bamboo. I love you, man.

Trust me. Jamie is an angel in disguise. He has the cajones to bring about the final resolution in Washington State that we all desire.

Derrick has worked behind the scenes on the Pride events around these parts. Also, after 11pm, at the Cuff on Saturday nights, the shirt comes off. Not to be missed.

Amusingly, I happened to drive by on my way from a Nick Licata fundraiser to the King County Dems meeting in Renton.

Good protest! You could hear you guys two blocks away - very nice.

Here's what steams me.

We're so focused on who gets what and what name to call it.

What happened to celebrating all the contributions of people made to this country.

We just passed Memorial Day.

But how about a celebration for all the fantastic things that gays have done for America? How about all the brilliance and cultural contributions. Same for African Americans, Italian Americans, plain ole Americans...and Gay-Americans!

Everyone is working hard to solve problems and in the past has brought intelligence and creativity to our heritage.

Instead of just equality -- let's put all people who contribute up on a pedestal and say -- great...I'm so glad your here...

@6: It's called "saying thank you", something that shouldn't be once a year but every day of the year.

Spotted Owl guy either a) really does support the gay movement or b) is the worst under cover agent in the history of homophobic rednecks.

Yes cover your selves with American flags at the root of gaining majority support is showing we're all part of American dream, pursuit of happiness, family, fairness, etc.

Emphasizing distinctions from those values, probably isn't how to persuade many nongay folks to support gay rights.

I'd also suggest rethinking the hybrid flag that's half USA flag and half rainbow, some folks would see that as an affront to the US flag. If they are otherwise persuadable why alienate them?

This assumes the plan is to win, by persuading people who are not already on board, rather than to express one's identity as part of a separate "nation", etc.

@10 - He kinda looks like my dad, just with less hair. He also looks like half of my friends' dads when I was growing up in Okanogan. He's the guy that needs to be seen at rallies in Spokane and Yakima.

No mention of how the rally was a pathetic 25 minutes long? And how we had such inspirational speeches as Ed Murray's "We have been disappointed in the past. We were disappointed today. We will be disappointed in the future." Great rallying cry!

No mention of how the Queer Ally Coalition actually gave voice to the anger everyone had been seething with all day, and took 500+ people through the streets back to the hill?

Yo Dominic, no mention of the rally going up to Cal Anderson? That's where people were really allowed to speak up and say their part, rather than just be spoken down to from the elected "representatives" behind the podium at Westlake.
