Listening in Bed, Half Asleep...

Posted by on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 7:42 AM

...but did the president just say that the constitution was written at the time of Christ? Twenty centuries ago? Should Sonia Sotomayor have corrected him? And says my brother in an email....

Obama seems to have a very interesting sense of timing. Is he announcing his US Supreme Court nominee on the same day that the California Supreme Court will give its ruling on Prop 8 for no reason? If the CA supremes overturn Prop 8, the conservative whackjobs will be whackjobbier than ever, and may therefore have less energy/bile to expend on Sotomayor. If the CA Supremes uphold Prop 8, of course, then the conservative whackjobs will be crowing over their victory and clucking over demonstrations sure to follow, and so perhaps have less energy to expend on Obama's choice.

Perhaps. But today's Prop 8 decision is a one-day event, whereas Sotomayor's nomination is a months-long affair—we're going to have a few revelations about her past and a series of confirmation hearings and two votes (by a Senate committee, and in the Senate itself). So the whackjobs will be able to set aside Sotomayor for a day and freak/crow about Prop 8 and then return to doing whatever they can to oppose Sotomayor (which will further bury the GOP with Hispanic voters—so bring it on, Republican douchebags). But the timing does ensure that the Prop 8 decision won't totally dominate tomorrow's headlines, which is pretty canny all by itself.

And was Sotomayor one of the dykes or might-be-a-dykes under consideration?

Do you keep a laptop in bed with you, dear? How Proust of you!

Or is there some new device the kids are using that allows them to post to Slog? Unfortunately, I'm still using my telex machine to dial in and post. I really should do something about that.

Keep that day job, budding Court Analyst....

If Prop 8 is overturned Conservatives will be in no mood to give a pass to a judge who thinks the court's role is to make policy.
It will energize and create opposition that would not have otherwise arisen.

She looks like a dyke.
Maybe that was the surprise;
Obama is going to nominate a beefy gal who looks like a dyke...

The news for the weeks to come will be Sotomayor. The Prop 8 decision could have become something major for nightly news tonight and morning news tomorrow but it is not looking that way.

We could always steal the front page story attention back by coming out in force tonight but I doubt this will happen. The anger that was seeen back in November is all but forgotten and many in the community are not even aware what will happen at 10am in CA.

This will be a heckuva day if you're hispanic or female, for sure.

Might also be pretty bad if you're gay.

... this might make Sotomayor pretty feisty!

...because Obama hopes the gays will just go away

Blackberry? Isn't that one of those low-rent fruits that hippies and country folk use to make preserves?

In any event, bed should be for sleeping and loving, nothing else. Get up and face the day!

@ nails it. This announcement is chosen by Obama in part to take away media attention from Cal. decision and take support away from gay outrage; the Sotomayor appointment revs up liberals generally to rally to Obama's side and they (nongay liberal base and groups) won't be so fired up to join to demonstrate in DC about gay rights when there's a fight going on for Sotomayor.

IOW he's a pol. and managing his own base (splitting them to relieve the pressure) is part of his politician-strategeries.

You think timing is just a big fat coincidence?

HA! I totally heard that too. Apparently it is very easy to misread the "2" on the teleprompter to read "20"...
