I just want all the knee-jerk Christian bashers on SLOG to remember this. Yes, there are a lot of bigoted a-hole Christians out there, but there are also a lot who are the first to get involved in civil rights and poverty rights. Just because there are a lot of vocal fundies out there, making religious people look bad, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of religious folks on the side of gay rights and other progressive issues.

Over on Joe.My.God there is a debate about how much an effort at real civil disobedience will cost the state of CA. If a lot of people get arrested or these protests can be spread out for a long time we might be able to bring the state to its knees financially.

CA is already on it's knees... Financially they would be laying on the ground taking labored wasp breaths as they gasp for air...

California is a quadruple amputee, financially

The church nearest me in los angeles has a giant banner out front saying Prop 8 should be repealed because god loves everyone. And this isn't some hippy-ass unitarian church either.

This really makes me want to fight extra hard to get marriage equality for our state.

Financially, California is a quintuple amputee.

And they're not doing it right until cop cars go up in flames.

That twitter page keeps going on about gay cops. Did the city really select gay or otherwise LGBT cops to keep watch over this protest? Or is that the twitter member being unreliable and wrong? That's the problem with twitter; no room for details, or even for a long enough sentence to distinguish sarcasm from a real statement.

It's a good reminder. Although I'm atheist, I really do feel sorry for the religious peeps that don't proselytize and generally keep to themselves. The screaming fundies have seriously fucked it for you guys.

The SF Chronicle reports that there were a contingent of gay and lesbian police officers stationed at the protest. They, unsurprisingly, said that they had mixed feelings about containing the protesters, but stated that they were there to do their job. Does the SFPD specifically send gay and lesbian officers to such events? I don't know.

@16 It seems, what with the high proportion of gay and lesbians in the general populace of SF, that there’d be a higher number of gays and lesbian represented in the police force. Perhaps they don’t need to create a special contingent.

If you are gay and you live in California, you should stop paying state taxes right now. If you're afraid of winding up in jail for this, just leave the state for some place (live Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hamster, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Iowa, or DC). The last thing California needs is a mass exodus of taxpayers, especially the gay ones who are more likely to have discretionary income.

@15
They always do. Most of the people killed in the Inquinisition? Just regular old Christians going about their business.
Protestants during Bloody Mary's reign? Yep, burned at the stake for not thinking the Pope was all that and the priesthood corrupt.

Religious fanatics are just not good for anybody.
