Big Crowd in Westlake

Very big crowd, some of of the usual protest/rally suspects, but way more young people, and lots of people that have become active in the movement since the Prop 8 decision last November. We are winning.

I can't get all riled up about this because the CA supreme court ruled on a procedural issue.

On the meat of the matter, they ruled that all those same sex couples already married are really, really married. Which means they affirmed that gay marriage. So it looks like a weird victory much more than a loss.

Good for the "usual protest/rally suspects" and good for all the newer young people. We need them both.

Here is an interesting article from the Daily Kos about why the bigots did not win totally in today's decision.

@6 - Not sure if this is what Dan used, but I can highly recommend Pano for all your iPhone panorama-making needs. It's wonderful.

Hey, we need a picture of the crowd who marched up the hill -- led by a bunch of tall, energetic, club kids (at a guess).

Was the march planned? They sure had a butt-load of copcycles escorting them...

I was there. The rally was totaly lame, typical Seattle "nice". Where is the anger, outrage? It was the blandest political rally I've ever attended. Not one of the speakers fired up the crowd, and we were ready to get fired up.
We will not get our rights by asking politely and then apologizing for being pushy when a court or a popular vote takes them away. We must demand and TAKE our rights. Civil disobedience is a time-honored tradition in this country. Time for some new tactics.

@11 .. well if you missed the march up the hill - and i think at least half the westlake crwod meandered off before it happened, then you missed the fire. i agree in part that the speeches weren't inspiring. it reminded me of pre stonewall lots of shirts and suits and being respectable and shit.. and then the rabble got roused . their shit was spontaneous and inspired and they brought it ready to roll. and after they chated , they rolled and screamed and chanted and yelled and stopped traffic from westlake up pike and up broadway. i hadda pee real bad and so i left them next to cal anderson. but it was a rabble and they was rousing. and they saved my day.

Aren't these the kind of rallies Dan Savage mocked six years ago?
