Pride Charade

Posted by on Fri, May 22, 2009 at 7:44 AM

While gay people are being murdered with impunity all over Baghdad... it seems a little queer for the U.S. Embassy to be hosting a gay pride celebration.

All-around absurd, I say.

Eugene Burdick is laughing, pointing and saying "told ya so" from the grave.

Re-reading @4, referencing Eugene Burdick in a post about diplomatic snottery is snotty. But it's apt. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPT.

So let me get this straight, we don't say shit about the killing of gays in Iraq, our President uses same sex marriage as a joke during dinner a couple of weeks ago, he has no plans to over turn DADT but a pride celebration (based on sterotypes BTW) in the embassy is okay?

Yeah, that's change we can believe in. I want my money back "Obama for America"!!!!

"Homosexuality was legal in Iraq under Saddam Hussein until late 2001, when under pressure from religious conservatives he criminalised the act of sodomy...As of 2008, Iraq is in a de facto state of civil war and some militias have been known to seek out and kill homosexuals and transgender Iraqis."

perhaps if we kill some more of them they'll change their minds and support gay rights.

Wow, slog has a mind of its own. It left out the rest of what I said...
Oh, well...can't wait to see Baghdad in next year's Damron gay travel guide.

Both the Clinton and Obama wings of the D party look at the GLBT community with disdain and annoyance, like gnats at a picnic..."Why do you keep pestering us with questions about your 'rights'? At least you're not being murdered like queers in Baghdad? We'd appreciate a little gratitude since we LET you have your little party and dress up like Bea Arthur or Dorthy. Now, shut up already!"

Our political choices are the complete and utter antipathy of the R's, being ignored by the D's or political irrelevance. It sucks. Despite Gavin Newsome's maneuvering to avoid his city from exploding after the impending Supreme Court ruling on marriage, maybe GLBT folks ought to have a big, bad demonstration to get their attention. Burn some police cars, break some windows, wreak havoc. Our problem is that the American people don't respect or fear us.

It's time for gays to bash back!

Sidestepping Dan's point for a moment....

I would really like to hear from anybody who knows more about this than the Post's reported... say... someone who knows the organizers? Or the organizers themselves? I KNOW that at least a few of you read Dan.
I want to know how you've managed this -- I've never heard of ANY U.S. embassy doing anything pride-related. (thinks a bit....) Nope, never. So I would really like to know.

@ 12. (raises eyebrow) Yes. Yes, now I see. Clearly the problem is that people aren't afraid enough of us.

You could make the same argument about gay pride anywhere in the US. If we are going to occupy other nations, it maybe makes our cultural traditions of celebrating freedom (sexual or otherwise) look a tad bit hypocritical?

When I read this, I kind of wondered if the embassy was gathering all the gays together for the convenience of those that like to murder them.

I guess no military personelle will show up to this- they could, after all, lose their jobs over a little "gay pride".

@20 ... you know back in the day they used to say "Hey black dude, you're lucky we give you a drinking fountain at all buddy" ... just saying. We are ALL LUCKY THAT NOBODY is killing us for things that we do. What kind of shitty fucking argument is that? This is AMERICA, remember, home of the free and all that bullshit? Liberties should not be extended only to the few and brave, for fuck's sake.

Did @20 just blame Dan Savage for inciting violence against gays in the Middle East?! So you are saying Dan created Islam?
