The Weaker Sex

Posted by on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 9:07 AM

Men! Again and again, we are ending up in second place.

Men really do have an excuse for supposedly being wimpy about coughs and colds - their immune systems are not as strong as women's, research suggests.

A Canadian study indicates that the female sex hormone oestrogen gives women's immune systems added bite at fighting off infection.

Women are turning out to be the supermen of men.

Turning out to be? How many men do you know could handle pushing something the size of a watermelon out of a hole in their body the size of a grapefruit?

Chicks are tough, dude.

um. didn't everyone know this? women do the lion's share of making men, so of course they're stronger. Why do you think there's patriarchy (you know, like having the strength of women always be self-referential)?

Christ, don't tell my boyfriend. He'll take it as scientific license to act like an even bigger baby when he's "man-sick."

I don't buy it. Ask any employer who takes the most sick time.

Well of course, the men aren't into chatting endlessly over details of things so they get bored sitting around the campfire and would like to be out hunting. So, they pretend to be prone to colds and say "excuse me, I am afraid of getting a cold, so I'm leaving this fascinating discussion in detail of all the plants you all didn't pick up all day and all the chit chat that happened before you got to the point of the story, I mean the place where you found the really good plants."

So then they leave a lot.

REsulting in self fulfilling feedback because by being less social, they then develop fewer immunities.

Meanwhile, men are better at fending off dangers that run away when you hit them with a stick.

Vive la difference, oui?

If men had to endure what we do during labor to bring their asses into this this world I think the 'weaker sex' phrase would've never been uttered by the dumb man who came up with it. Of course we're stronger than you.

Charles,
Check this out from the NYT a few years ago:

Indeed, females are the stronger gender.

BUT... women suffer from more chronic diseases. personally, i'd rather have a cold than rheumatoid arthritis.

It's to kill the weak sperm. The healthier a woman's immune system is, the less likely she is to get preggers.

Gah. Charles, who let you near the science again?

It is well known that testosterone decreases your resistance against disease. Read some evolutionary literature and they mention and debate why testosterone exposes you to disease yet is the best course of action for a species.

Basically males are better off taking high risk high reward situations to pass on their genes. People with high testosterone such as steroid users are known to be sick SLIGHTLY more often. However the difference is not that big. Calling women supermen is ridiculous.

A line of immunocompromised women would not survive long enough to rear children and thus die out.

Until recently, without the increased immunity, women would not have survived childbirth, plus sex was not particularly ... clean ... until just a short while ago (weekly baths are a RECENT innovation, and most people used to have a bath maybe once a year).

Women are also less squeamish about blood and pus and puke and poop and stuff. At least in my experience.

I get sick all the time. It sucks.

But I also notice that men have a tendency to deny when they are sick and refuse to go to the doctor when they obviously should.

Men, on average, don't like to be seen as weak ... but who does?

#4 - but number of sick days and and actually being sick are two totally separate things. It's impossible to know from that data what's really going on, other than people that come to work sick are assholes.
