The Hump of Irrelevance

Posted by on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 9:40 AM

I would estimate that I'm posting this somewhere on the upward slope to the Meta Summit, but I'm usually wrong about this, finding myself instead in the "waning popularity due to increasing irrelevance" camp.

Anyway, here's Twitter trending topics explained by @megpickard.

I remain,
@ahecht.

Pretty good. I'd put Twitter somewhere between a 7 and an 8 on that graph (probably a bit closer to 8). Cool.

Is this graph intended to represent topics discussed on Twitter, or Twitter itself?

Personally, I'd be happy to see Twitter go the way of Friendster.

For one thing, the terminology ("Twitter", "Twit", "Tweet", "Twat") is fucking stupid and annoying. You can't talk about this technology without sounding like asshole.

And Twitter is redundant. Facebook gives me status from friends, places, groups, and celebrities I care about. Facebook, RSS, and blogs give me pointers to interesting and zany Internet content. And now we're all supposed to drop everything and switch to Twitter because, um, why?

It would be helpful to note that this graph was created based on her observation and no actual data...

I'm sure someone out there is still using ICQ and IRC, too.
