The shoe has finally dropped at Intiman. Bart Sher has—gently, gently—announced his departure.
So gently, in fact, that the first sentence of the press release talks about his reign extending:
Intiman Theatre Board President Kim A. Anderson announces that Bartlett Sher has extended as Artistic Director through the end of the 2010 production season.
Intiman has picked a successor, to be named in June. In an unusual move, Sher has extended his contact 18 months to help plan the new season and finesse the institutional transition with the new person.
Sher will not direct the upcoming Othello he was scheduled for, but will turn over those reins to Arin Arbus, who staged an Othello at Theater for a New Audience. (Isherwood loved it, Time Out so-soed it.)
Sher's Seattle sun is—gently, slowly—setting.
