The New P-I, By the Numbers

Posted by on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 1:30 PM

How's the new, online-only Seattle Post Intelligencer doing? In terms of April traffic, better than last year. According to the P-I:

Two months after becoming the nation’s largest newspaper to move to an all-digital news model, seattlepi.com’s year over year numbers show that it has more users this April than last April, when the Post Intelligencer was still publishing with an 80% larger staff, an amazing feat for an online venture with a newsroom of 20.

In April, its first full month of operation, seattlepi.com had 4.3 million unique visitors, up 1.6% from 4.2 million in April 2008 (source: Omniture). Total page views for the month were 37.3 million.

Time for a party? Why, yes. This Wednesday, according to invites that have been mailed around town, the new P-I will be celebrating its "rebirth as the region's most popular news & information portal" by pouring wine and passing around hors d'oeuvres at the Seattle Art Museum. Fancy! (And with fancy guest speakers from Hearst, Yahoo!, and Google.) Who knew you could turn ads for teeth whitening into such a grand event?

Here's the invite, which yours truly did not receive:

And which, just in case anyone's missing their old print newspaper games, sets up a quick little round of "spot the differences."

So, uh, page views are up, but that doesn't guarantee it's profitable. What are the financials?

I know I still only go there to read Art Thiel and Horsey.

Hey Eli as the SeattlePI.com's most popular blogger I was invited to the Shin Dig on Wednesday. Do you want to be my man-date to it? But be nice infront of the corporate ghouls from Hearst.

Meet me at the ferry terminal at 6:30 on Wednesday. I'll be leaving the Bremerton boat if you are down but let me know first.

Of course I would love to write game reviews for The Stranger again if you still published them.

Eli, you meant invitation, not invite. Invite is a verb.
