Check out this pic of the sun, taken by astronomer Thierry Legault with a five inch telescope in Florida, yesterday:

Make sure to zoom in on that speck near the bottom left of the sun -- it's the Space Shuttle Atlantis, caught transiting the sun in high orbit. The dark object next to the Shuttle is Hubble!

joe @ 7, NASA's writeup on Flickr says "Thierry made this image using a solar-filtered Takahashi 5-inch refracting telescope and a Canon 5D Mark II digital camera."

That's waaaay more low-fi than I had imagined.

Has anyone here ever made a Dobsonian telescope? I saw a special about John Dobson the other day, and I really want to make one.
