Now Fight about MinIUscule!

Posted by on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Somebody accused me of misspelling "miniscule" the other day, and then I ran into this. We are members of a long and productive debate, evidently.

It's fine to use a variant spelling knowingly, but if you're writing for formal purposes (which probably does not include Slog), your copy editor will likely change the "i" to a "u" because copy editors typically prefer the first spelling listed in the dictionary of record, and it's consistent with "majuscule."

I bet that the spelling "miniscule" is used way more commonly in the meaning "very small" and the spelling "minuscule" is used in the meaning "lower case letter," but the dictionaries don't comment on that just yet.

Well, if you want to use a site titled "English Spelling Reform" to back you up, fine. To most educated people it just looks like you don't know how to spell.
