Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is appearing as the ghost in Hamlet in Chicago's Hyde Park today and tomorrow.
In a related event, U.S. Appeals Judge Diane Wood is giving a talk called "Law, Disobedience, Justification and Mercy," reportedly "drawing from Measure for Measure and The Merchant of Venice and exploring Shakespeare's treatment of laws that are not followed." Just so happens Wood is considered to be a leading candidate to become Breyer's new colleague on the court, to replace David Souter. There's a great primer on her career here.
(As the Associated Press reported earlier this week, the other leading contenders are Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court Carlos Moreno, and U.S. Appeals Court judges Sonia Sotomayor. Anyone have a strong feeling about any of these names? Should we start an office pool?)
