The explosion sound effect should have come later after the explosion, FAKE!

you really should bookmark RSS feeds of both Reddit, Digg and Geekologie so you can see this when it made its rounds last weekend and be on top of things.

Well, I don't think the Constitution class starships were suitable for atmospheric travel...

Highly unlikely. You can clearly hear the klaxons of the Enterprise alerting to the approach. Both Kirk and Picard, and even Christopher Pike would have acknowledged that discretion would have been the better part of valor and evacuated way before the DS appeared. This is just some Lucas apologist trying to make himself feel better for the last 3.25 crappy movies. Roddenberry Forever!!!

Ah... I doubt they would be fist bumping with the subsequent matter-antimatter explosion that would ensue after destroying a refit Constitution Class IN THE ATMOSPHERE!!!!!

@6 -- those of us bringing up the rear couldn't care less that someone else saw this before we did. Doesn't change anything.

I note you are reading it here....hmmmmmm

Of course, the Trekkies would reply that the "Genesis wave" way more powerful 'cause it can destroy whole solar systems not just dopey little planets like Alderon.

Very cool effects demo. Couple gripes, though.

First, what was the deal with the stormtrooper shooting the cameraman? That blaster was definitely NOT set for stun, and it looked like it hit the camera guy in the torso or thigh. GENERALLY A HIT LIKE THAT RESULTS IN DEATH. Even stormtrooper-grade plasteel armor only attenuates the blaster hit; the cameraman should've been on the ground writhing in pain at the least.

Second, per w7ngman, what would the Enterprise be doing in the atmosphere at all, let alone that low? I'm pretty sure that Constitution-class starships do not have surface landing capabilities (though maybe the primary hull is equipped for separation and emergency landing).

Third, what kind of weak-ass Death Star hit was that? This is a machine capable of destroying planets, and yet the Enterprise took the entire hit with no spillover? Even a quick shot like the ones that took out the Mon Cal cruisers in Return of the Jedi should have been enough to gouge a furrow in the bay.

Fourth, and most egregious, the Enterprise would not blow up like that. The ship is full of antimatter, which makes a rather bigger boom than dynamite. I can state with some confidence that a major warp core breach over San Francisco would pretty much take out the entire city. Those stormtroopers? Vaporized before they heard the explosion.
