Lost Season Finale Open Thread

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Wed, May 13, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Is Locke really gonna kill Jacob?

What's the frickin' deal with the statue? TELL ME!

Will Juliet, Sawyer and Kate get it on?

Will the Losties have to find a Humpback whale before they travel back to the future?

Which character will get bumped off tonight?

Will this show ever make sense?

None of these questions (except for maybe the first three) will be answered in tonight's LOST FINALE OPEN THREAD!!!

Isn't the show kind of over now? I guess season six will be the zombie season.

I really hate this show. Every season gets worse and I swear not to watch any more. Nothing ever happens. NOTHING EVER HAPPENS! JACOB, I'VE BEEN LOYAL FOR 6 YEARS. WHAT ABOUT ME? WHAT ABOUT ME?

@7: Yeah, sorry. An ending would imply that it was some kind of conclusion. Better to call it a reason not to watch the ending in 2010.

dorkwads, look at the Egyptian figure. what did the god carry? what does that symbol mean?

basically there's a taco bell in the foot, and jacob and locke have been alive forever. however, locke isn't locke hes that other dude from the beginning of the earlier episode.

Lindy, catch up with the times and don't click in a dogdamned thread about the season finale? duh. spoils!

The big statue on the island is of the Egyptian god Seth. He's holding an ankh cross, which was a symbol of eternal life and showed up in heiroglyphs whenever the ancient egyptians wanted to say "now we're talking about a god"

Maybe the show is trying to say that Jacob represents Seth. Locke could represent Osiris and Ben could represent Horus (who fought Seth) although that would be weird because Horus is the son of Osiris. Or ben could represent Seth, since Seth killed Osiris, who later rose from the dead. But then I don't know who Jacob would be. Ra maybe, since Ra was the original Osiris (sorta), but Jacob's actions don't really fit Ra.

In any case, the big statue is definitely Seth.

Oh, and for the record, I loved the ending. It sure leaves them with plenty of room to do whatever they want next season!

@11, a couple of weeks ago, everyone was sure the statue was Tarawet, but now it looks more to be intended as the Egyptian god Sobek.

Continuing with the Biblical references, the anti-Jacob's name is probably Esau

Urgutha, no way is the statue Sobek.

@14, how are you so sure? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek

@15, yeah, it's awful to be sucked into a clever show that provides mystery and suspense and puzzles to mull over between episodes.

sorry about the double post above

I have to go with Akbar Fazil on this one- although the statue wears a skirt like Sobek, it holds two Ankhs like Tawaret (who also happens to be the protector of pregnant women).

And Urgatha Forka, we already have a RA on the island (Richard Alpert) and a Horus (Horus Godspeed the leader of the Dharma Initiative).

Two things make me feel it's Taweret.

1. The pictures just line up more to me from known images and statues. Plus, look at the "cloth" illana found in the Cabin.

2. The whole fertility aspect of Taweret lines up with the islands mythos alot more.

@14,
Did you mean to say "no way is the statue Seth?" I didn't mention Sobek in my comment.

I still think Seth would make more sense.
God of the desert = Beach
God of darkness and chaos = smoke monster

Akbar, sure looks like the statue was Seth to me, hell it's even holding the same shit as the picture on the wikipedia page.

@21 OK I was wrong in 20, based on other sources I just read, apparently the thing having four toes is the big tip-off because Taweret is supposed to be a hippo and a hippo has four toes. Oh and the hat the thing is wearing matches pretty good too.

Urgutha, I did mean Seth. I think while responding to your comment I referenced the one below yours mentioning Sobek.

Either way, I still stand by the statue being Taweret. Set (Seth) was depecited as a mythical like creature that has yet to correspond with a known animal. The statue in Lost has more of the hippo like qualites that Taweret has. Plus the ears.

Another fun little tidbit-

Q:What lies in the shadow of the statue?

A:He who will save us all. (Translated from Latin)

Did Locke kill Jacob. ... kind of ...

The statue is of Set, with an ankh behind it - just because he's burned doesn't mean Jacob is "gone". Read some Egyptian source material.

Juliet .... NO! dang. But she saved us all - or did she?

By the way, it's not Seth, which is my second middle name, it's Set. Get it right.

Richard Alpert is a pirate from Black Rock that Jacob keeps alive, not the god Ra...I think. Sayid and Juliet better not be dead, they are my favorite characters.

Will: Set/Seth, both are correct and both are pronounced "set." I only used Seth because that's what I learned when I first started reading about the religion.

btw, nice sims lovetub avatar!

2 ways to look at Juliet's death: 1) She didn't die during the fall. If she was truly alive to initiate the bomb, then maybe she'll get transported back to current Lost time (2008 or whenever they're supposed to be); or 2) she's really dead-dead and the island brought her back to life (temporarily) in order to set off the bomb. What the island wants, the island gets.

I predict Juliet triggered the "incident", which sends the Losties back to the present time.

And because I'm an optimist and Juliet lover, I hope she survives Desmond style- by getting shot out of the hole like a lawn dart. Possibly naked.

I second that unpaid commenter. As much as I hate Angelina Jolie, I will gladly watch Gia just to gaze upon the beautiful Elizabeth Mitchell.

Did you know shes a local? Lives on Bainbridge or one of the other islands.

Half this episode was awesome, the other half was BULLcrap. Here's a hint: the half with Juliet suddenly becoming RETARDED and going along with Jack's stupid plan was the bullcrap half.

This episode could've been an hour long and been much better. This one pretty much had much of the cast running around doing nothing for much of it.

LOVE Jacob. Whatever he is, he's interesting, and I like it. I actually think Richard is the "Anti-Jacob" more than "Beardy" is. He seems to have thwarted Ben having a relationship with Jacob all this time for a reason. He tried to hand-pick Locke for the Island, and encouraged him to be leader, but is puzzled and hesitant about Locke meeting Jacob. Now, he seems determined to help the new crash survivors with whatever it is they're doing.

I can't wait for Season 6. This show has cornered the market on making viewers crazy with unanswered questions. I wouldn't expect it to stop now. :)

I don't think Richard thwarted Ben. I think Ben was just a "tool" being used by Jacob. Witness Jacob's comments right before Ben killed him ("What about you?" - as in "there's nothing special to talk about").

This thread was actually informative. And honestly, I kind of like the idea of egyptian gods/old adversaries (Jacob and Beardy/not-Locke) fighting a long-war/conflict about human nature (or something). Jacob clearly keeps trying some kind of experiment over and over hoping to get different results, and not-Locke/Beardy seems to think it's pointless. That's interesting.

Frankly, I like this type of plot better than the idea they're aliens, or that there's just random events not connecting all this - although I'm sensing Stargate-esque qualities.

Frankly, I also like the idea that Ben's not a good guy (he's manipulated by not-Locke) better than finding out he's actually "good" (after all he's done). Although of course there are still lots of questions. Are all the "others" people that Jacob/Beardy have been manipulating/controlling once they reach the island? And why? And why did Jacob meet all the lostaways at various points in their lives? To get them onto the plane somehow?

And is the Dharma initiative and Hanso and so on actually powerful? Or just some yahoos that stumbled on the island and mucked some stuff up.

I thought this episode was quite good. Hope the final season is at least satisfying. Doesn't have to wrap it up in a nice little package, but leaving everything unanswered just to keep things open for future movies or whatever, or pulling a "it's all a dream" BS would kill things.

The confrontation between Notlocke Ben and Jacob was amazing. All of our surviving losties have met Jacob but Ben hasn't until now. Jacob doesn't even care about Ben, and seemed to say exactly what Ben needed to hear in order to motivate Ben to kill him. Why? What's his plan?

Also the contrast between Bernard and Rose and our heroes running around shooting at each other mirrored the conflict between Jacob and Smokey/Notlocke/enemy guy. Smokey doesn't want conflict and death, but jacob thinks progress is important despite the pain it causes. Or something.

Is what Jacob talking about in the beginning of last night's episode the flashbacks? All of our characters got to sort out their pasts via conflicts on the Island. Is that the 'progress' Jacob was talking about?

I thought it was interesting that they made it a point to show that Jacob needed to touch each Lost character in the flashbacks...
