Are You Coming to Slog Happy?

Posted by on Tue, May 12, 2009 at 11:55 AM

Because you really should come to Slog Happy. It's this Thursday, May 14th, at the Roanoke Tavern on 10th Ave. Slog Happy starts at 6 pm, but the Roanoke's happy hour starts at 4 pm with $8.75 pitchers of Kokanee!

f496/1242154504-kokanee_bottle.jpgThere's currently a debate in yesterday's Slog Happy post about whether or not Kokanee is good beer.

Will in Seattle says: "Mmm, pitchers of Kokanee ..."

Irena says: "Good god, Will, Kokanee is crap. Fine if you're on the cheap, but if you actually like real beer, pay the extra $$ for a microbrew."

Fnarf says: "Kokanee, like all beers of its ilk, only taste good straight out of the can. Something about the aluminum on your lips. Out of a bottle or a glass they taste like extremely dilute fish urine."

Then Mr. Herriman says: "When have you had occasion to drink fish urine, Fnarf?"

And finally, boxofbirds says: "I just like saying 'Kokanee.'"

Come! Drink beer! Decide for yourself if Kokanee is good and have discussions about fish urine with your favorite slog commenters!

Kokanee is union-made fresh from the glaciers.

No, that's not a joke.

While I love cider, Kokanee is good - not as good as Double Brown from New Zealand, but that's not exported.

I won't be going to Slog Happy if I win those fancy James Beard Dinner tickets. Speaking of, when are you going to announce the winner?

Beer should be evaluated on the merits of flavor, not the labor practices of the brewery or the source of the ingredients. I'm not saying it's wrong to support brewers who have good labor or environmental records, I'm just saying it's a bad way of judging the finished product. If it's made using slave labor and jenkem, but it tastes like heaven, it's still a good beer.

P.S. When it comes to low end Canadian lagers, I'm a Labatt man all the way.

So, when is cutoff for the $8.75 Kokanee pitchers? do they have them until 7 pm?

I will drink their cheap Kokanee and I will be pleased. I don't understand people who care about "good" beer. To me (for the most part), the "better" a beer is, the worse it tastes.

Yeah, I'm with Aislinn. Kokanee is fine, it tastes like a cheap beer and I'm OK with that. Although if they still have Strongbow on tap that's what I'll be drinking. (I will also be having one of those burgers I like so much, probably.)

@8 Are you talking to me? Will I be there? Yes, yes I will be there. I will not be drunk, however, as I don't drink. But I will probably be loud and insufferable.

Hernandez, it's a proven fact that the sweat dripping off the brow of a union employee into the beer he/she is brewing is sweeter than the sweat of a slave or highly exploited brewery worker. That's due to the stress endured, just like that suffered by cattle in commercial feedlots.

Canadian sweat is particularly renowned for its purity, which makes it even better. They don't have all that corn syrup in their systems.

Taste the difference. Drink Kokanee.

Yes yes! I'm in the same boat. I would like to know where my thursday night debauchery will be taking place, and whether I should wear a necktie or assless chaps!

Well, I - for one - would be mightily impressed if they served a beverage (either beer or cocktail) named "Croaton". That not being the case, I will enjoy my usual pousse café.

Okay, I admit it, I am a beer snob! But full disclosure time: I drink Nescafe, and like it -- flavoured Nescafe. With flavoured Coffee-Mate, which I load up on every time I'm in the US because it's not available in my godforsaken backwoods country. I am a cheap coffee slut. My apologies to all of Seattle.

Kokanee tastes good to me, and I will gladly drink it for $8.75 a pitcher. I also drink Rainier and Bud Lite, both unironically. However, PBR is right out.

Kokanee is easily my favorite cheap beer, and probably the best canned or bottled beer, ounce-per-dollar. Goddamn I wish we could get that in SF. Or even Rainer, for that matter. I'm gettin' freakin' sick of Tecate, which tastes like Coors... with a lime.

I've lived away from Seattle too long, I'd entirely forgotten the existence of pitchers. It's like a giant Shakey's up there.

boxofbirds 27
@26 they don't have pitchers of beer in SF????? I take back all the times I said I would like to move there.

I'm pretty sure all regular beers (Kokanee, Rainier, Oly, PBR, Coors, etc) taste exactly the same, which is to say like beer-flavored water. Perhaps I need to do a comparative taste test to make sure.

@23,

Pick your coffee yourself? If it makes you feel better, the USDA or the FDA or whatever has guidelines as to how many bug parts are safe.

@27,

They have them down the peninsula, maybe in the East Bay too. Don't know what's up with SF though.

A Corona with a slice of lime and some guacamole and chips on a hot day is nice, I have to say.

And I don't really mind the bug parts. I mean, I don't eat processed meat, so where else can I find a protein source equivalent to all those nutritious ground cow vaginas?
Posted by Irena on May 12, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Dougsf 31
@27 - I'm sure they do, somewhere, but I never see them in my neighborhood. Come to think of it, my local does, but I've probably seen someone order a pitcher there three times in nearly 10 years. They just don't seem to be a normal part of bar culture here. Remember, Seattle mostly has taverns, not bars. I could probably explain it, but it'd take a lot of words, and no one cares. You wouldn't miss'em.

Also, you drink enough crappy beer (there's a time and a place for watered down cans), you notice the difference-just as much as you'd notice the differences between so many of the hops-overloaded microbrews.

@23, now you've got me wondering -- which bug parts? Do bugs even have vaginas?

My filthy Canuck husband won't allow Kokanee in our house at any price, much like I gave him no end of shit the day his ignorant Canadian ass brought home a case of Milwaukee's Best. And I used to live on that shit when I was in my 20's.

We might drink it cheap when we're out, on account of being stingy bastards, but only after we've numbed the tastebuds with a couple of rounds of something better.

Ultimately, I'm not saying it's the worst thing you could ever drink (especially in this economy). Just don't delude yourself about it being delicious.

As to beer, I remember the first time I was at an American drinking party, think it was at Whitman College or somewhere in WA, back in the old 4 pct alcohol days in this state - and me used to a decent 7-8 pct alcohol beer/cider.

Man, that was fun. Downed 24s while our Yank friends passed out drunk and we were mostly unaffected ...

@ 49, you're all wet. There are about 10,000 beers worse than Mac and Jack's. There are also a lot of beers better than Mac and Jack's, but it ain't shitty.

The problem with Washington beers is that they're waaay too hoppy. That's been my limited experience, anyway -- I'm thinking of Red Hook, and something I had around Pike Place Market once that everyone said was good.

Dan,
It was great to meet you ...again! at SLOG Happy. I am the fella from Oak Park, IL. I like that Roanoke Tavern especially that tiered outdoor patio with the ping-pong tables. And, that Brown Beer (Georgetown Brewery) was delicious. Mike, the carpenter was a hoot no? Yeah, I recommend that book I am reading and brought with me, "Worst Instincts" by Wendy Kaminer. It's an inside critique of the ACLU. Very good.
