Wish They Wouldn't

Posted by on Mon, May 11, 2009 at 8:57 AM

It looks like officials at Miss California USA are going to snatch that tiara off her head:

The Miss California USA pageant is expected to announce its decision over whether Carrie Prejean should keep her state crown amid allegations of contract violations.

The pageant has been investigating whether the 21-year-old San Diego native violated her contract by making public appearances with groups opposed to same-sex marriage. Prejean also failed to reveal to organizers that she posed in her underwear as a teenager.

Pageant organizers have scheduled a news conference on the matter for later Monday. There's no word on whether Miss USA contest owner Donald Trump will disqualify Prejean as first runner-up in the national contest. The state pageant's runner-up, Tami Farrell, is expected to attend the news conference.

This will breathe fresh life into the Miss CA nonsense, play into her Christian martyr schtick, and—trying to look on the bright side here—give Maggie Gallagher a much-needed, well-deserved stroke. What will get lost as this is reported is the fact that Miss CA is getting the boot, if she gets the boot, for violating her contract with the Miss CA organization, a contract that forbids political campaigning (and posing topless). And Miss CA has reportedly recorded a fund-raising robocall for Gallagher's National Organization for Marriage... so she's asking for the boot. If the Miss CA org was smart, they'd deny Carrie the satisfaction—and media/martyr boost she's looking for—and let her limp through the rest of her "reign" unmolested.

I had no idea these beauty pageants are such ugly things.

She knew this would happen. Everyone did. She chose her path when she wouldn't shut the fuck up about her empty-headed bigotry.

It's a fucking beauty contest! Who gives a good god damn?

Dan,
Agree. Carrie Prejean probably stands to gain in this whole sordid tale. Talk about a media story that won't die.

I first learned the name Maggie Gallagher from this Greg Beato post. It tells the story of how she was paid $21K to ghostwrite a pamphlet on the greatness of marriage by the Bush admin, and then proceeded to play the anti-elite voice of the real American working masses card that the Jesus crowd is still so fond of. It's a classic, and it should be celebrated. It's just too bad that Beato's archives are still the ancient kind where you can't link directly to a post. The one I'm talking about is under the "married to it" heading.

Oh brother, Dan, let it go. People have a right to their opinions, just like you do.

But bigotry is so ugly--and nothing is so beautiful as a contract enforced.

what the fuck? weren't you creaming in your jeans about the topless pics? i figured you would have wanted her to be dethroned.

They would be venturing in dangerous territory if they opt to take away her title because she became involved with pro marriage protection groups. That's nothing short of persecuting someone for both their religious and moral beliefs. One would think those are protected.

@8:

The difference being of course, that Dan's contract doesn't preclude him from opining on political issues, as does the one signed by Ms Prejean.

Have to hand it to her though, she's put herself into a win-win on this one. If Trump or whoever makes the final decision opts to take back her crown, she'll just use the "Persecuted Xtian " gambit and get a butt-load of support from the Fundies; if they let her keep it, she still gets to be Miss CA, and keep all the goodies that entails, plus either way she's garnered and equally large butt-load of additional free publicity for herself.

She may only be entitled to her requisite 15 minutes, but it appears she's going to wrest maximum advantage out of every last second of it.

She will have the support of the Fundies no matter what happens, if she's fired or not.

It is perfectly simple. She has violated her contract. Fire her.

@11: Seriously? Playing the Hitler card in reference to a beauty pageant winner?

@13, not when they are in direct violation of a contract... and also, nobody has a "right" to be Miss California (or Miss USA, Apple Blossom Queen, Rose Princess, etc.). These are private programs in which nobody has a right to participate without meeting the requirements of the program sponsors (example: you can't be married, or have children, or be overweight, or over/under a certain age, or any number of things that are perfectly legal). Now, that doesn't mean it would necessarily be a good idea to strip her of her crown. But it's certainly not an inalienable right to be Miss California, and then to use that platform for something other than its intended purpose.

And can we please stop calling this a beauty contest? It's a scholarship program! (Wow. It is next to impossible to say that with a straight face.)

Somewhere out there, there is a Christian blog attaching a picture of Christians being fed to lions with this story. Comte is entirely right.

She is being de-crowned because of CONTRACT Violations! Sheesh... What if they let her get away with all of the violations? It would set a precedence for soft and hardcore porn models to compete in Miss CA and Miss USA beauty pageants...

@13:

She signed those "protections" away when she agreed to be a participant in the Miss USA Pageant. As a representative of the Pageant, she has a legally contracted obligation to abide by the provisions set therein, one of which is, apparently, that she will not engage in political activities, which her testimonial for NOM clearly is. If she believes these contractual limitations are illegal, she could fight them in court. But, until a judge makes a determination on their validity, or hands down a stay until a judgment was made, it's my understanding the terms would still be enforceable.

Newsflash: The overwhelming majority of americans don't care. The folks who do care at this point are a small circle consisting of Maggie Gallagher, Perez Hilton, Dan Savage, Dobson, Loveschild, Carrie Prejean and Joe My God. Everyone else? Nope.

In other news, the Seattle Times is on board with Decline to Sign, telling folks not to sign the petition for the referendum.

Reverse Polarity 26
Ah, Loveschild, blind to the obvious, as usual.

Her contract with the Miss CA pageant specifically states that she (1) cannot pose for nudie pictures and (2) can't do political advocacy (either for or against any cause). She clearly violated both, in a big way.

It isn't a violation of her free speech rights, it is a violation of a contract she signed, voluntarily.

If you don't like it, take it up with the pageant organizers.

At this point, I don't think it matters if they take her crown or not. She's already cemented herself as a spokes model for opposite marriage. As such she is sealing her own downfall, as attitudes shift toward gay rights. She'll go down in history like the people who supported segregation.

I love the way she can defend her own unchristian ways, yet still be anti-gay because somebody else is not living by her cherry-picked rules of her version of Christianity.

If the pageants don't want them taking political positions it seems odd to ask politically charged questions.

@28: Right, because the second you take sides you have to sign up with a political organization and make robocalls?

Remember what happened to the last person who whined endlessly about "gotcha questions"? Oh right, she's back to huntin' wolves, feeding at the federal trough and havin' a beer with Joe Sixpack, you betcha.
