"Let's make it official."

Posted by Dan Savage on Sat, May 9, 2009 at 10:05 PM

I believe these are Barack Obama's first public comments about gay marriage since Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. They start at about the 3:56 mark. And Wanda Sykes took the piss out of Limbaugh and Sean Hannity at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Is that mocking or is that a lovely thing to say?

Earlier today this was released:

Though it isn't clear if this means a change of DADT or if a repeal is still on the table.

Obama hasn't earned the right to use marriage equality references in self-promoting jokes.

Holy crap... be prepared for the absolute shitstorm from the right-wingnuts tomorrow morning. Every Fox anchor is going to be crowing about the "Wanda Sykes controversy" for the entire week. Glenn Beck may even cry a little bit.

U.S. rabbi gets 30 years for molesting his daughter

By The Associated Press
Tags: New York, Israel news

A New York rabbi convicted of molesting his daughter has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Monsey rabbi Israel Weingarten was found guilty in March of abusing his daughter throughout much of her childhood.

The trial was traumatic for his victim, now 27. Weingarten acted as his own attorney and put his daughter through a grueling cross examination.

Federal Judge John Gleeson told Weingarten on Friday that his behavior during the trial had made his crime even worse, saying "You seemed to enjoy yourself in a perverse sort of way."

The judge said he would never forget the woman's pain.

Weingarten told the court that he did not want to represent himself in the trial, but felt that he had no other choice after he found the two attorneys appointed to him by the court unsatisfactory.

The jury convicted him on all five counts, according to which he had transported his daughter outside of the country when he traveled for business in 1997, in order to commit sexual crimes against her.

The judge sentenced Weingarten to 10 years in prison for each count, and an additional 3 years probation at the conclusion of his prison term. However, he will be serving two of the 10-year sentences concurrently, and therefore be released in 30 years.

At the beginning of the sentencing hearing, the victim and her older brother, 29, read aloud the details of the crimes the defendant had committed against his daughter. They argued that their father had brainwashed their mother and younger siblings.

The victim is Weingarten's second child, out of a total of eight children. The six younger children all support their father. Two of his daughters, aged 20 and 23, even testified on their father's behalf during the trial, and claimed that it had been their mother who abused the victim, their sister.

After the sentencing, one of the daughters declared that they would be filing an appeal.

Loved the speech, but his comment about Iowa means nothing towards equal rights.

@ 13,

Yes.

However if it was just a coincidence, I wish she'd waited a nanosecond longer to make that joke so we could've seen The Commander and Chief snork water out his nose.

Oh my god! That shit had me laughing, especially at the end when she was talking about giving him middle seat in coach! I want to watch the whole dinner, I missed it. Obama's reaction: clearly amused. Holy moly, that made me laugh.

Here's Obama's joke:

David Axelrod is here. Yeah David and I have been, been together for a long time. I, I can still remember. I get a, sort of, I, I tear up a little bit, when I, when I think back to that day that I called Ax, so many years ago and said, 'You and I can do wonderful things together.' And he said to me the same thing that partners all across America are saying to one another right now: 'Let's go to Iowa and make it official.'

I watched all of Obama's and Wanda's speeches this morning... really funny stuff. The one joke I thought was a bit inappropriate was Obama's one about Sasha and Malia taking a joy ride on Air Force One over Manhattan. Dude, people were terrified when that happened -- just listen to the 911 calls or watch the cell phone videos. Otherwise hilarious though...

Wow, Colbert is still the reigning king of the correspondents dinner....but DAMN Wanda was good.

And Obama was amazing as well. But I am not sure about the Iowa joke....was it offensive? I am really unsure about it.

The Hillary joke was good.

Other jokes, seems like for many there are 1 or 2 that seem a tad over the line.

That's satire.

I don't thin the Iowa joke was offensive, but I'd be pleased to see some actual, non-jokey talk soon to follow about gay marriage.

The Iowa joke gives me the sense that his opposition to gay marriage is starting to melt away, which is very very hopeful.

@8 and the backlash is in full swing. They leave out the part where she quotes him as wanting the administration to fail. Of course, who would have expected otherwise?

I thought the Hillary joke was over the line... but who knows? After so many years of living with (or at least married to) Bill and being in the political world, I'm sure she's got a pretty thick skin by now.

35 I don't care what she does in her bedroom, so long as it stays there. She's not the national spokesperson for homosexual behavior, so I don't know why you brought this up.

36, Except you want to take her marriage away from her. What would you say to Wanda if she was standing before you, to tell her you think her marriage is wrong, and should be dissolved?

37 I would tell her that she's funny, a great comedian and she was right on target during the White House Correspondents Dinner. I don't need to bring that other stuff up. It would be be disrespectful and out of line to talk about the type of things you want.

I know you're a homosexual Rob, fine, but you know, in the grand scheme of things, in terms of what makes the world function as it is, that part of you doesn't contribute for such a function. I would believe you would care that people could take into account more important things about you (like your spirituality, work for those in need, bettering the life of others, contributions for the advance of the human race and such) than what you do in your bedroom. I believe that's what Wanda cares about, being a comedian, making people laugh and not what you think she should be about.
