LAST CHANCE: Vote For Your Favorite "Best Breakfast" Nominees!

Posted by Megan Seling on Fri, May 8, 2009 at 12:57 PM

A couple weeks ago we asked Stranger readers what some of their favorite brunch and breakfast places were here in Seattle (see Questionland). We've compiled all the nominees, and now you get to vote for the winners, and choose who'll be featured in our upcoming breakfast guide! The polls close at 5 pm today, and the winners will be announced in our May 21st issue.

UPDATE: Since you all clearly have very strong opinions on breakfast matters, please be reminded that you can write reviews of your favorite (or least favorite) places that will live on the internet for all eternity in our dining guide. Just click here!

The polls are now closed. Thanks to everyone who voted! Be sure to pick up The Stranger's breakfast guide in the May 21st issue to see who the winners are.

Hands down, best buffet is Salty's Sunday Brunch on Alki.
Love it! Oh I want it NOW!
Hey, I need 100$ to splurge on the goodness! Hmm, where is my boyfriend at....

Of course the Official Hipster Doughnut™ is winning. And neither Dunkin or Winchell's is even on the list. And vegan? Vegan doughnuts? That's disgusting. Doughnuts are meant to be enjoyed with a hot cup of Hills Brothers coffee in an atmosphere of formica and glass. I want to vote for Tim Horton's, but in Seattle I guess I'll go with Family Donut.

I *almost* picked Top Pot, since I live so close it's almost like cheating on a spouse to NOT pick them.

But I went with Mighty-O. Despite what you think Fnarf, their vegan doughnuts are AMAZING and are the best to go with a latte or cup o' coffee.

@4 Totally agree. I am surprised Patty's Eggnest didn't make the cut as well. Of course, there is s no section for "Best British Breakfast in Town", either.
YUM! Shit I am totally starving and I mean, eggs benny with lox & red onion, sourdough toast, a light japanese seaweed salad and mimosa. I NEEDS IT BITCHES!

@8, well, there you go, Monique -- I wouldn't drink a latte if you paid me. Ugh. All that milk, how can people over the age of six months stand it? And I refuse to eat vegan versions of non-vegan food on principle. I have nothing against veganism, just fakery. Doughnuts are supposed to kill you.

Also, I could have sworn I nominated Rooster's Breakfast Club for best eggs benedict, which they should win, and Pancake Chef for best biscuits and gravy. Maybe I only dreamed it.

@ Fnarf- I hate most vegan foods. I was tricked into a chocolate raspberry mighty-o. Amazing. Better than top pot, more flavour and richer texture. Try one sometime Fnarf, you will be amazed that something vegan is actually, well, good tasting! If you don't like it it, at least it won't kill you.

@9, there's no such thing as a "British breakfast". Full English, full Irish, but they're different. You won't get a potato bread with your full English, for one thing, nor white pudding (suet), only black (blood). I'm not entirely sure there are good English breakfasts in Seattle outside of my kitchen; the ones at the George and Dragon are probably the closest -- but severely lacking several key ingredients.

Two fried eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage (oatmealy bangers), 2 black pud, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, baked beans, chips, toast (better yet fried bread in the grease from all of the above), tea. What am I missing? Oh yeah, a newspaper with a naked chick on the front, nipples on page three. For fun, my version will sometimes include both American bacon and Irish. More tea. Brown sauce, red sauce.

The regular, non-"full" English breakfast is just eggs, bacon, chips, beans: http://russelldavies.typepad.com/eggbaco…

I can't believe you didn't include the best family-owned diner in town. It's barely inside the city limits, but Young's Chinese-American Diner in White Center has some of the best breakfasts in the Seattle. Perfect hash browns, a heart-stoppingly good chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy, plus you can get an order of hot and sour soup on the side. They even have a BBQ pork omlette served with egg foo yung sauce. And the waitresses are all sisters, aunts and other extended family.

I used to go to Ly's Donuts fairly often - I don't think the guy who works there ever goes home. I've been in there at 6 in the morning and 10 at night, same guy behind the counter. I think he just goes in the back to sleep when he gets tired.

Have you ever met Monique, Tad? She is a very attractive, personable and self-assured young woman (I'm allowed to say that because I'm old), and not even remotely what I would call a hipster in the derogatory sense. Unless "hipster" now just means "under thirty" or something.

Lloyd, Mrs. Fnarf will eat a chocolate on occasion, no matter how much I glare and sneer and roll my eyes and scuff my feet and accidentally bang my nuts on the edge of the counter. And I too will accept a fritter, grudgingly. And I'll even eat a cruller myself sometimes if I think no one is watching.

Fnarf, mighty-o donuts will kill you. They don't claim to be "healthy" donuts, just that they're healthier than regular donuts.

Mighty-Os plain, vanilla cake doughnut is a work of art. It's so yummers.

The only thing about the vegan doughnuts that isn't as awesome as regular ones is that they get stale faster. So best to go to the actual Mighty-O shop in Tangletown and try 'em there.

@Fnarf, I'm with ya on the whole donut thing. I think the vegan donuts my partner brings home (Mighty-O in particular) taste unpleasantly like canola oil. It's a moot point, being celiac, so I mostly can't eat donuts anyway, but I enjoy having an opinion.

@40 PCC's vegan cookies are typically not good IMO, especially the gluten-free ones. The gluten-y ones sort of end up rubbery. Then again, I don't get gluten-free vegan baked goods: they have no structural stability. If I were vegan AND celiac I'd just go happily without instead of risking a cookie containment breach. There's better vegan sweets out there, if I felt like restricting my diet further, which I don't.

How can anyone comment on the excellence of a donut w/o trying it? You sound like you moved here from Boston. Give the great and Mighty-O a chance, and my suggestion is Don King! Not only is it absolutely delicious, it doesn't make you want to die when you're done. Not only have the owners perfected the cake donut, they are mightily conscious and were one of the first businesses in Seattle to compost scraps and recycle. They are very cool!

You're missing absolutely the best brunch spot in Seattle - Senor Moose in Ballard. It's where my boyfriend takes me when he's done something wrong (yeah, it's that good). Delicious Mexican brunch (and dinner as well). Lots of egg dishes with black beans and amazing esquites - roasted corn with cream and cojita served with crispy flour tortillas. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The wait is very much worth it.

I never even liked doughnuts until someone bought me a Mighty-O and now I'm hooked.

There are a LOT of bad tofu scrambles in town, flavor and texture-wise, even at the veggie cafes, but the best hands-down tofu scramble is at the hot bar at PCC-Fremont. So good! Has sunflower seeds, taters, veggies... mmmm.... and Eggscetera Blue Star cafe has a good tofu scramble, too. Neither are on the list so I thought I'd mention it.

@Ladyson - YES! Ravenna Crepe Cafe! The Heaven's Crepe there is just that, it's simple enough with ham and gruyere with two spears of asparagus and a load of the tastiest bechamel sauce ever.

Tilth's cheddar cheese biscuits with gravy and smoked pulled chicken (with a fried egg on top) will make your heart explode, but it's incredible. I always take parents and out of town guests here.

Used to love and put up with the wait for Glo's, but there are too many delicious brunch spots in this city to deal with such bitchy waitresses.
