I Hate To Think I Was Supporting Socialism...

...when I vacationed in Hawaii. I didn't even know I had an alternative to Hawaii's socialized beaches...

But how do I get their in a non-government subsidized way. I can't drive on the roads or use the airports. I could always swim. Maybe I could take my boat, but if the pirates get me what do I do then. Maybe the US government will come help me, but I don't want them in my other business, just when my ass is totally on the line.

Lesson: fuck the rich, fuck Glenn Beck, and remember who is always there for you. Uncle Sam.

Why does opening comments hang on "waiting for podcasts.thestranger.com" even when there's no podcast in them?

"Government isn't the solution to our problems; government IS the problem -- and now you have cholera".

Fnarf, it looks like they're just hosting some web stats tracking on the podcasts server and it's probably hanging a bit writing its logs.

They need to make a bunch of these. Maybe have one where a guy gets knifed outside a club and is slumped over bleeding in an alley, then when he dials 911 he gets a wrong number message and the narrator steps in and explains that there's no such thing as 911 because that would be socialist and evil. Or maybe another where a fancy SUV is driving along just fine when it hits a pothole that breaks the axle clean off, the guy gets out and wonders aloud why nobody ever fixes the roads only to be reminded that socially subsidized roads are evil.

@14, I'm not sure what you're trying to prove, but if you want onerous rules of conduct, don't look at public beaches; look at private covenants in gated communities. No parking on the street, ever? Check. My inlaws live in a place where technically you could be forced to sell your property and leave if you leave your garage door open for more than one hour; in practice, someone just comes and tells you to close it first. No socialists there; that's a private association.

you don't need to go to Somalia for privatized beaches. you live in WA state, where most of the waterfront is OFF LIMITS to you peasants.

VERY very good. An alternate good video would be to show what America's beaches would look like if they were all privatized, run by the wealthy. What free-market-puritan, capitalist idealist crazies never admit is that ideally they want EVERYTHING privatized. They need to be called out and beaten back more often over this. the loud-mouthed, glenn beck-following right wingers are all freaking out about "socialism" now as though America was meant to be purely capitalist, with no taxes unless they are used to blow the shit out of countries that may or may not intend to attack us. back to the age of the robber barons. that is their vision for us.
Democrats / liberals need to do a better job explaining why unregulated capitalism would be, and has been, a total disaster. If they can successfully communicate that, they can take kick a huge dent in one of the main pillars of the republican party.

When I first moved out to California from New York, I was amazed by the idea of hundreds of miles of public beaches-- it's almost all privatized on the eastern side of the continent. What a beautiful thing to hold the beaches in public trust for all citizens. If there need to be a few rules, especially in more populous beaches, to ensure they are safe, I'm glad. Of course there should also be public and wild places with fewer rules, just the basic rule that would apply anywhere, ie, the golden rule.
