Danny Westneat

Slam the Seattle Times as much as you like—and my boyfriend likes to very much—you have to admit that the state's largest daily is great on gay issues. (Too bad their support for gay rights doesn't extend to denying their endorsement to candidates—Bush, McGavick, Rossi—who seek to do real damage to gay people and families.) Danny Westneat delivers a terrific column today on the gay marriage movement, the collapse of opposition to gay equality in Washington state, and the disarray on the right that Dominic has been covering on Slog. But while the Seattle Times is good on gay rights, many of its readers are not. So jump into the comments thread on Westneat's column and show the man some love.

I'd sooner jump into an open sewer in Kolkata with an open sore on my face than into the Times's comments.

90% of those comments on Seattle Times articles are trolls either pretending to be right-wing or are right-wing. It's really hard to tell, but while I support the motion for giving love to Danny when he deserves it, don't do it just because of the lamestain, ur, lamebrain factor in the Times comments sections. They're not worth your time.

The strangest thing is that the most sane comments section of any Seattle-area news media is KOMO's site! They have their trolls, and many people fall prey to it, but even Slog can't boast the fervor of the not-insane posters there. yay KOMO?

Danny Westneat is pretty consistently the best columnist on the Times staff. My favorite columnist printed in the Times is Leonard Pitts Jr., but he's just syndicated from the Miami Herald.

I believe the Times offered its employees domestic partner benefits long before that was the cool thing to do. If Frank wasn't such a shill for the Estate Tax repeal that paper's politics wouldn't be half bad.

See? When the Times's comments get backed up, they overflow and spread all over the floor in here. @6.

I did go and read Westneat's article - which is worth the read - but reading the comments on ANY newspaper's site is an exercise in masochism beyond my capability for inflicting pain on myself. There are some dumb loudmouth fucks in this world. We get a handful of them, but most of them seem to spend their time on newspaper website forums when they're not whacking off over their latest issue of Guns&Ammo&Other Penile Substitutes or cut & pasting articles from WorldNut Daily to "prove" their points on other blogs.
