The Age of Killer Fathers

Posted by on Tue, May 5, 2009 at 11:27 AM

We have reached the point where we can say that American fathers have declared war on their families.

Troy Ryan Bellar, 34, used a high-powered rifle with a scope to shoot his 31-year-old wife, Wendy, when she tried to leave their home, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Two of the couple's children — 5-month-old Zack and 7-year-old Ryan — also were killed, but a 13-year-old got away, with the father chasing and firing after him, officials said.

When the shooting began, the couple's son, Nathan, ran out of the house and down the street — with his dad chasing him through the garage and firing several shots, authorities said.

Nathan was unhurt and will be placed with family members.

Investigators do not know what led to the shooting, but believe it was preceded by "some kind of domestic disturbance," a statement from the sheriff's office said.

Nathan understands the meaning of catastrophe. He has no future.

If only more 5-month old children carried guns, this sort of tragedy could be averted.

OH PUHLEEEEEZ. Hyperbole much?

If it is "war" here, what is it in your enlightened homeland paradise of Zimbabwe?…

"Violence against women, especially wife beating, is common. Domestic violence accounted for more than 60 percent of murder cases tried in the Harare High Court in 1998. The media increasingly reports incidents of rape, incest, and sexual abuse of women. "

"Violence against women in Zimbabwe increases"

afrol News, 8 March - A recent brutal murder of a Zimbabwean student by her boyfriend has caused renewed attention towards gender-based violence in Zimbabwe and abroad. Zimbabwe's Vice-President, Joice Mujuru, has vigorously condemned gender-based violence and any cultural practices that put the safety of women at risk, and she is getting support from abroad.

A combination of an inflexible approach to cultural and traditional practices; an economic downturn that has seen women become the chief bread winners as men are made unemployed; together with odious beliefs on HIV and virgins has meant gender-based violence is frighteningly common in Zimbabwe.

Press reports and data collected at workshops and through non-governmental organisations (NGOs) indicate a steep rise in violence against women in Zimbabwe. No hard statistical evidence exists, although indicators and questions on this violence were included in the Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey of 2005 - which will be the first time to have documented data on gender-based violence.

The brutal murder case in end-February has caused a broad public debate on gender-based violence in Zimbabwe. Traditional healers and police have added their voices to the condemnation of this form of violence. Vice-President Mujuru has expressed concern at the rise in cases of gender-based violence and called for a bill against it.

Support is also coming from abroad. The UN's Children's Fund (UNICEF) this week called on Zimbabwe's political and community leaders to campaign widely and forcefully to end what it calls "the growing tide of violence against women and girls in Zimbabwe".

"The crime of domestic violence has devastating impacts on women and children and on Zimbabwe's development," said UNICEF's representative in Zimbabwe, Festo Kavishe. "UNICEF says no, no and no to the horrifying stories of women who go into a relationship with high hopes and good intentions - and find themselves trapped with men who beat, kick, rape and at times kill them."

According to a UNICEF analysis, Zimbabwe's increases in gender-based violence appear to arise from traditional practices and principles that include the subjugation of women, and that it is culturally permissible for a man to physically "discipline" his wife and children; Zimbabwe's worsening economic times have meant more and more women are becoming the breadwinners while the men have been forced to remain at home; and that Zimbabwe has a high HIV prevalence rate, at 20.1 percent, and more than half of these are women and girls.

Infant murder suspect: 'It's a dirty game'

TAMPA, FL -- Authorities have arrested a man they say threw an infant from a car along I-275 Tuesday morning. The 3-month-old boy died.

21-year-old Richard McTear Jr. was apprehended around 9 a.m. at 3803 Arlington Drive in Tampa.

Jason Bird, an off-duty news photographer for WTVT-TV, found the child, identified as Emanuel Murray, in the southbound emergency lane near Fowler Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

"On the side of the road, I saw something out of the corner of my eye and at first I thought it was a baby doll, and then as I was thinking about it more I thought that was awfully big for a doll," Bird said.

He decided to go back to take another look.

"It was laying there with its eyes open," he said. "I couldn't look at it. It freaked me out, but fortunately law enforcement came right away."
About 45 minutes earlier, deputies were called to a home at 12414 North 15th Street for a report of domestic violence at the Marbella Apartments.

The caller, Jasmine Bedwell, said that she and McTear were fighting and that she and her 3-month-old son had been beaten. Bedwell told the operator the man picked up the baby and threw him on the concrete.

She said he then picked up the child and took off in a blue 4-door Chevrolet Impala.

The baby was pronounced dead alongside the Interstate around 4:30 a.m. A sheriff's spokeswoman said the medical examiner's office will determine just when the baby died.

Tampa Police later located McTear's car at 1601 River Cove in Tampa.

McTear has a prior record. He was previously arrested on charges including felony battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery by strangulation.

After his arrest, McTear was taken to Tampa Police District 3 Headquarters and then taken to the Falkenburg Road Jail where he is being held.

When ABC Action News reporter Dustin Chase asked how he could throw a baby out the window, McTear responded "It's a dirty game."

Trial opens for man accused of killing his uncle, 3 others

Philadelphia Daily News

The trial of a man accused of shooting to death four men - including his own uncle - in a crowded Southwest Philly bar in July 2007 opened this morning.

Vonzell "Pooh" Roundtree, 28, faces four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his uncle, Jamar Thompson, 31; Thompson's friend, Stacy Gallmon, 36; Claude Snelling, 30, and Arthur Jennings, 20.

Abay Wheelers Bar on 62nd Street near Wheeler was crowded the night of July 21, 2007, as people went in to watch a boxing match between Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright on television.

After the match ended, about 12:30 a.m. July 22, an argument broke out between Thompson and Snelling, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Selber said in her opening statement at the start of the nonjury trial before Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner.

Jennings also got in the fight, she said, as did another man. Then Roundtree, who was sitting in the bar, pulled out a 9mm Beretta and fired at Snelling, "and fires and fires and fires until the gun is empty," Selber said.

Thompson and Jennings were killed at the scene.

Snelling was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly afterward.

Gallmon, who was not involved in the argument in the bar, was also shot. He ended up dying about a month later, that Aug. 24.

Roundtree has made a statement to police admitting to the shooting.

Defense attorney David Nenner said in his opening statement that his client was under the influence of PCP, ecstasy and alcohol at the time of the shooting and was "impaired." Nenner is pursuing a diminished-capacity defense.

Columbus man found guilty of murder

Javon Thompson gets life in prison for murdering girlfriend who was seven-months pregnant

By Alan Riquelmy - --

Javon Thompson was found guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend on Thursday.

Jurors took around six hours to convict the 23-year-old of felony murder, attempted feticide and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He was acquitted of a count of malice murder, said Assistant District Attorney Lew Barrow.

Thompson was sentenced to life in prison, followed by five years’ incarceration, by Muscogee County Superior Court Chief Judge John Allen.

“I feel satisfied,” Barrow said at the end of the four-day trial. “He killed that girl.”

Thompson was accused of shooting 22-year-old Sarahonica Thrasher, who was 7 months pregnant, around 4:45 a.m. on June 6, 2008, outside of his 23rd Street home after an argument. Thompson drove Thrasher to The Medical Center where an emergency operation occurred to deliver the baby, police said.

Barrow discussed his version of events when giving his closing arguments. Thrasher had checked her phone around 4:30 a.m. the night of the shooting and then tried to leave Thompson’s home, Barrow said. Something about that phone, maybe related to another man, led to an argument.

“Somebody with bloody hands — we’d submit that would have to be (Thompson) — went through her purse and checked her telephone,” Barrow said. “He still had to see her telephone. He had to know.”

Thompson tossed the gun in a sewer while driving Thrasher to the hospital and he tried to flush marijuana down the toilet when he returned home, the prosecutor said. He didn’t tell hospital staff Thrasher’s or his name.

He lied about the shooting, saying it was a drive-by, until he knew the story wouldn’t work, Barrow said.

“Folks, he’s still lying,” Barrow added. “He started lying that morning, and he hasn’t stopped yet.”

The prosecutor reminded jurors about testimony from Thrasher’s mother, who testified that on Mother’s Day Thompson threatened her daughter’s life.

“And what did he say?” Barrow asked. “‘If she leaves me, I will kill her.’”

In his arguments, defense attorney Tim Flournoy admitted that the relationship between his client and Thrasher wasn’t perfect, but noted that a neighbor testified she saw the couple that day and noticed they were getting along. He told the jury that it could consider Thompson’s actions before and after the shooting.

“911 was called,” Flournoy said. “Second of all, he took her immediately to the hospital. The question is, can you really define his intent? Because if you can’t, that’s reasonable doubt.”

Flournoy said Thompson panicked and was frightened that night, which led to his false story about a drive-by.

Also, a nurse testified that Thompson appeared in shock the night of the shooting, which could explain why he wasn’t thinking clearly, the defense attorney said.

Flournoy, who argued before Barrow, said the prosecutor would talk to jurors about those lies.

“But later, he corrected that,” Flournoy added. “You saw him on that video. He was crying ... and he came clean.”

Deputies: Man accused in tot's slaying to be charged with sex crime

By JOSH POLTILOVE | The Tampa Tribune

Angel Robles

A Tampa man charged Wednesday with killing his girlfriend's 11-month-old son will be charged today with sexual battery on the child, Hillsborough County deputies announced today.

Angel Robles, 25, of 7336 Central Park Circle, has already been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of Isiah Ian McGuire. Detectives say Robles denied beating the child.

It is unknown at this point when the sexual battery occurred, sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said. Deputies determined sexual battery occurred based on an autopsy and evidence at the scene, Callaway said.

Meanwhile, Tampa police say detectives have reopened an investigation into a baby's death in January 2008 to determine whether Robles was involved. Robles was not the father of that child, police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.

Examiners determined Isiah died from multiple internal injuries and blunt force trauma to the head, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators gave this account of what happened Tuesday at the Central Park Circle home Robles shares with the baby's mother:

Isiah was with Robles from about 2:20 p.m. to the time Robles called 911 at 8:11 p.m. Robles told a dispatcher the baby appeared unconscious. Isiah was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Robles was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and taken to Orient Road Jail, where he is being held without bail.

Isiah would have celebrated his 1st birthday two weeks from Wednesday.

Robles declined to comment today.

Deputies say they had no prior calls for service to Robles' home in the past 12 months. The
Department of Children & Families didn't have prior reports of abuse on Isiah.

Thursday 3:30 Update
The Greenville County coroner say the infant was pronounced brain dead at 11:55 Thursday morning at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The mother has chosen to donate the child’s organs.

Timothy Leroy Massey was originally charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.

The charges against Massey have now been upgraded to homicide.

Investigators say Massey is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

**Wednesday 9:00 AM Update**

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has charged an 18-year old man for assault and battery with intent to kill in the beating of a one-year old baby.

Timothy Leroy Massey is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center. Deputies say Massey lives at the home with the child’s mother in a mobile home park at 2011 Anderson Road.

Investigators say Massey is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

Reporting by Kristen Nastasia

**Tuesday Night Story**

The Greenville County Sheriffs Office tells us, they got a call at around 8pm Tuesday night, of a child not breathing at a home on Anderson Road.

Responders found a 1 year old boy, who was given CPR and revived. While they were working on him, deputies say they noticed bruises and lacerations all over the body.

The child was taken to the hospital, where he’s on ventilator, and is said to be in a life threatening situation.

The child’s mother and boyfriend and one other child were home at the time, according to investigators. They have been taken to the LEC in Greenville for questioning. However, it should be noted, they have not been charged with a crime. “We had two adults in the house and that concerns me. One out of two adults should be able to control what happens around the child or children”, said Lt. Tim Ridgeway of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Ridgeway said the 4-year-old child who was also at the home was not harmed. Ridgeway said dealing with abuse cases like this is hard on them and their neighborhoods and he has a message for anyone thinking about harming a child. “A lot of offiers have children and when you see this stuff it pulls at your heartstrings. These children are helpless and they look to adults for help and guidance and this happens. People in the neighborhood are upset about it. If you don’t love a child there are plenty of people that would love to have a child. And if you get angry enough around a child like that walk out the door and calm yourself down”, Ridgeway told News Channel 7.

Police spokesperson Dorienne Boykin told the victim was in the 4300 block of Emporia Avenue in Chesapeake Wednesday afternoon, when two men approached her and asked for directions. When she looked away, police say one of the suspects hit her in the head with a closed fist and stole her purse.

An officer on the way to the crime scene spotted the suspects' vehicle driving down Campostella in Norfolk. That officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it kept going. The short pursuit ended in the 1800 block of Greenleaf Drive in Norfolk.

Police took all three suspects into custody.

Pregnant woman accused of kicking 8-year-old

Posted:04/29/2009 6:00 PM

OCALA - Police officers arrested a 20-year-old pregnant Ocala woman who they say kicked an 8-year-old child in the stomach during an argument with the girl’s mother and threatened and abused another pregnant woman.

Tranise L. Brown was charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, according to an Ocala Police Department report.

When Officer Matthew Clinker arrived at Parkside Garden Apartments off Northwest Second Street on Tuesday, Danielle Holloman, who is pregnant, told him she and a neighbor had been sitting outside when Brown approached and began arguing with them. Holloman said she has been having problems with Brown for the past week.

During the argument, Holloman said Brown pushed her face away and poked her several times in the temple.

Another woman heard the commotion and came out of her apartment with her 8-year-old daughter, and Brown turned her attention to that woman, according to Clinker’s report. The girl pushed Brown, telling her to get away from her mother.

Witnesses told police that Brown then kicked the little girl in the stomach, causing her to fall backward and hit her head on the concrete walk way.

Brown then ran away.

Brown later told Clinker she may have kicked the child because she thought the little girl was going to hit her in the stomach, according to the report. Brown told the officer she is three-months pregnant.

Clinker arrested her and took her to the Marion County Jail. The 8-year-old’s mother took her to a hospital for observation.

The crisis is not one of black or white but one of masculinity. Modern American men of a certain kind have no cultural tools to help them understand what's happening in their world. All they have are their guns. At least a blind rage in an earlier era might have produced a drunken binge, but not a family extinction. People like Troy Bellar quite literally didn't know any better; he is mute and powerless in his world, with only a gun in his hand.

I posted a clip on Facebook the other day from Youtube, of the old Andy Williams show, where Andy was singing a loose, lightly sentimental tune in his trademark red sweater. A friend remarked "back when that was on, he was considered cool, maybe even a womanizer; now people would think he's gay". It's true. Masculinity for huge swathes of America has been stripped of everything except "Hulk mad" and unfortunately "hulk shoot". It's the same exact thing that makes kids bully the "gay" (as if) ones at school.

@32 - good analysis, I think. The archetype of the "good father" has gotten lost somewhere; it's like we're no longer teaching that to boys. Some girls get good, strong female role models, but where are the (non-ironic) media role models of the decent, caring, involved fathers? Not the authoritarian patriarchs - there's a huge difference between Atticus Finch and The Great Santini.
