Okay so she's a hypocrite for holding others to standards she herself does not meet. Can we now move on to more important issues like Marriage Equality.

Sargon, for being an ancient and dusty tome of gay history, you seem to be forgetting Anita Bryant and how her involvement helped cement several gains in the fight for equality (ignoring the orange juice thing).

Shocking.

I feel bad for her. How angry one must be to think someone is a bad person just because they feel marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Unemployment still rising to new dizzying heights, the economy still in the toilet, the dollar weakest in decades – but the story on this dopey bitch and her fake tits has legs?

Check please.

Let's just create an island for misfit bimbos where she Palin and all their nitwit right-wing fundamentalists anti-love jesus psychos can go to be, mate, breed, and die in peace – away from the rest of us. They can get an island next to all the other anti-tolerance fundamentals out there and really enjoy the "us vs. them" antics they so crave.

Can I get an amen?

@4: What's with the "bad person" kindergarten-speak? Most people I've seen say she's a hypocrite, an opportunist, and/or a bigot. All of which there are pretty reasonable arguments for all of those. And why feel bad for someone who's taken the national stage and spoken her views? Agree or disagree, she was specifically seeking publicity.

She purports to think that 300 million Americans should live their romantic lives according to the Bible, and that religious interpretations of the Bible should be used to define marriage and who can marry who. She has every right to think that, and the rest of us have every right to scoff at her and even to revel in it when her hypocrisy comes to light.

This is all a corallary to Foot In Mouth, so the yawns are warranted. But when a non-celebrity suddenly becomes a celebrity by negative proxy (hello, Perez!), there's an impulse to "fight back" the public tar and feathering - except it's just an impulse which often leads to more protracted tarring, feathering, and destruction of reputation.

Not shedding a tear.

God forbid we live in the past where there was a more united GLBTA front, I mean, we should be crying to Rachel Maddow and praying Lambda Legal steps in to save our rears. Forget all this unified front stuff.

This made it onto the "Today Show?" Seriuosly?!

PEOPLE LET THIS GO! The more attention we give Prejean the more power she has. This is nothing but a cat fight masquerading as a fight for civil rights. If we in the equal rights movement mock every idiot who says something stupid and offensive about gay marriage we'll never have any time to get legislation passed that promises equality.

Also, a turn of events like the release of these nude photos is not going to turn off Chrisitan activists who have embraced Prejean. They are likely to see the release of these photos as the results of gays and the "liberal" mainstream media attacking one of their already persecuted own.

MOVE ON ALL READY.

stuck in boston: With Anita Bryant, people were increasingly turned off by her position because she was a sweet and innocent beauty queen who made no effort to mask her intent to see rights for gay people stripped completely. In turn, they saw the religious right as a fringe group that didn't represent what they felt were fundamental rights.

Which, in turn, led to the defeat of Seattle's Proposition 13 and California's Proposition 6. In fact, Bryant's presence in Seattle in the lead-up to the Prop 13 vote was credited in boosting it to failure.

It really highlights how shallow and petty the anti-equality argument is, even if it takes shallow things like ambushing her with her own nude photos or hitting someone like Anita Bryant with a pie to make people notice it.

Please, learn your history or you'll be doomed to repeat it.

Not entirely related, but in researching Mrs. Gallagher I found out an interesting fact. She apparently authored a book titled: "Why Married People are Happier, Healthier, and Better Off Financially". So even the extreme bigots at NOM recognize that marriage has tons of benefits that are unrelated to the biological production of children, yet they continue to seek to deny these benefits to gays. Because they are douchey assholes.

This person has the best media hacks working for her - or - is absolutely brilliant.

What better than the repentant sinner for a
Christian movement - sinner with great boobs and sweet face and getting better in interviews day by day.

She has a long career coming in right wing politics and all new moralists from the gay community are looking very mixed up.

Since religion deals with sin a lot - to be a sinner is no big deal - it is an ACE to be a reformed sinner ....and in todays sin market, bare flesh is hardly the apex of sin....

Some of you folks need to get in touch with the real stuff on the ground and how it works.

He name is increasingly a household word. And by the way - men always clamor over what pretty women they want to fuck do - either madonna or whore. Wait for feminists to come to her side a bit - after all naked is hardly uncommon in modern America.

Getting better every day, and Dan, where are your porn shots? I bet they do exist, at least a bare chest - Juice it up Dan. This lady is going international in just three weeks.

Bet they bring her to Washington for the Referendum campaign, and I bet she helps raise millions. Who could get a crowd at the chicken fundraiser better than her?.

And I bet she has gay friends who will be showcased at some point ...

I'm a Christian, though I don't thump my Bible over anyone's head. And there are lots of us liberal Christians who simply love God and thinks gays should have the same rights.

I can't believe it's 2009 and we're still talking about gay marriage. It shouldn't even be an issue any more.

I'm glad these photos are real too...(yeah I know, not very Christian of me)...because she claims to represent my religion and she doesn't.

Dan, I disagree with you on a lot of things, but I like your logic about how Prejean (and all the rest of the right-wingers) use Bible verses to justify denying rights to gays, and then ignore all the other verses of the Bible.

You bring up a good point (and thank you for assuming I don't know my gay history), but Anita Bryant was an antigay activist without much prodding, Prejean was just a dumb blonde who gave one mealy-mouthed response in a beauty pageant. Of course post- Miss USA Prejean is now an activist, but it may well have taken a bunch of mean-spirited bloggers to play into her persecution complex to get her there.

Are you suggesting it's worth cultivating shallow enemies on the right for the good of our cause? Cause let me tell you, with all due respect for history, I'd rather Ms. Prejean were yesterday's news than have a pissed off beauty queen doing everything in her power to attack the gays she feels ruined her "career."

I'm just about done with hearing about photos of grown women (assuming this pic was not taken when she was in her teens) showing some skin, or a nipple, and being shamed for it. I support marriage equality and I think this woman is a hypocrite, a bigot, and really really stupid, but I'm fed up with the notion that women can be derailed when proof surfaces that they are - gasp! - sexual.

I'm all for her little bible-thumping crusade being derailed, but on better grounds than her being flirty in a photo. I get the hypocrisy of it all; she supports denying some their rights based on values that apparently don't apply to her. But I'd love for women in the spotlight to stop apologizing for racy photos of themselves.

stuck in boston: Anita Bryant got her start because she, too, was attacked for "speaking her mind" when a former friend-turned-enemy ran a successful campaign to get an anti-discrimination law passed. Seriously, read more about her.

She only passed anything because she used the popular sentiment and made it more pointed by using fear tactics, and when it turned against her, she fell from grace hard and fast (see: Briggs Initiative). The popular sentiment, as we've seen, is more and more in favor of marriage equality, so Prejean will rise and fall like the tide in Fundy.

It's silly to say their argument is without merit and then turn around and say "how dare anyone acknowledge glaring proof of this!" -- remember, it was her activism that destroyed Bryant and it's what will do Prejean in. And the religious right will go with her.

@ 44, they're saying she was 17. And it's an issue (for us) NOT because she's being sexual, but because a) her Miss California contract contains a clause where she swears she didn't pose for such pictures, and b) she's using the Bible to justify her position while doing things in violation of the Bible. See the "Miss Californicate" thread for more about that.

you make it too simple

Bryant had a real career in music, and after her crusade LOST at the ballot box, she faded

this new girl goes from obscurity to fame in days - from this point it is all up for here

what is her shelf life, good question. I think it might be long if she keeps up the good media work

and by the way, Anita bit the dust, bigotry did not go away with her demise - and winning elections is a good tonic for any movement

GLBT folks have lost about 30 in the last decade, incl. Calif. - we have some ground to make up - bigot beauty queens aside

Why do people keep talking about Prejean as if she's just some dumb irrelevant blonde who made the innocent slip-up of bashing the gays in the privacy of her own... nationally televised Miss America Pageant stage. The poor dear. Sorry, but she thrust herself in the political spotlight when she decided, all by her helpless little blonde self, to rattle off a bunch of hate speech during the pageant. And yes, it's hate speech, no matter how many gay friends she mentions, and no matter how many "it's-just-my-opinion-no-offense's" she recites.

The right-wing relies on personality cults and "wholesome" imagery to make their argument that their Christian actions are in the best interest of the American Family. It's all they have. So when another one of their spokespeople, almost invariably, is proven to be violating the same set of rules that they are trying to legally force other people to comply with, then yes, it is worth pointing out. On blog after blog after blog. And if Ms Prejean doesn't like all the negative attention, then she needs to remember that nobody forced her to say indefensibly hateful things on national television. If you want to sponsor acts of bigotry, then you need to be prepared to get called out on it.

If I become the head of PETA, and then take videos of myself shooting dolphins while wolfing down veal, I'm not going to be all shocked when it receives some media attention. Hypocrisy is rampant on the right (it's become synonymous with right-wing), so pointing it out and discrediting it is a perfectly valid move.
