Books I Can't Stop Drooling Over This

Jacket Copy has the full photo of the Wisdom Tree, a conceptual bookshelf that will be on display at this month's International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. I haven't lusted after a bookshelf this bad since I first learned about the existence of Ballard Bookcase Company.

Looks like a lot of space for not a lot of books. My problems with book shelves is always that I don't have enough space for all the books I read (two~three a week).

That ain't conceptual, but it sure is sculptural.

I like Ballard Bookcase well enough, but nothing compares to product 57th St. Bookcases in Chicago. I'm still kicking myself for not carrying my two bookcases out here in my backpack.

This solves the problem of people not having much stuff anymore. At least, not enough to broadcast their trendy beliefs and values to visitors.
It used to be that every pretentious git had a bookcase to show off to guests. Then the books were replaced by CDs. Then DVDs. Now with Netflix and streaming downloads, what's left to show off? Empty shelves.
This lets you replace the empty shelves with white space. Just enough room for a few books or DVDs. Instead, show off your pretentiousness with your taste in furniture.

That thing is awful. Not only do I dislike its overall form (the lines don't really go anywhere, and the branches that hold the books in place seem like a weak afterthought), it's off the charts on the "Dad with a beard from My Two Dads would put this thing next to a purple couch that looks like a '57 Chevy" scale.

The good folks at Ballard Bookcase are closing up shop. Or so they said in a letter I got about a month ago. When I went by to pick up a CD shelf, they told me that after 30 years, they were ready to do something else.

I ordinarily agree with your taste in books and comics, but this shelf is tacky, tacky, tacky to me. Impractical, insistently loud... lemme see, alliterate this shit... uh... ich. It's just not for me.

It does change the way you see a bookcase. Makes me want to play with design myself. Practical and artful. Form following function.

My fantasy bookcase would be a tossup between the amazing staircase and floor to ceiling glass-fronted bookshelves of King Ludwig's study in the Munich Residenz.
