re: Overheard in the Office

For the record, the squirrel Tim wants comes from Custom Creature Taxidermy:

It costs $450.

From the "about" page:

None of the animals used in Sarina’s work were killed for the purpose of using them in her art. All animal components are recycled. She utilizes salvaged roadkill and discarded livestock, as well as the many animals that are donated to her. Donated animals are often casualties of the pet trade, destroyed nuisance animals and pests, or animals that died of natural causes. A very strict "waste not, want not" policy is adhered to in her studio - virtually every part of the animal is recycled in some manner.

I would go for two sets of hind legs - symmetry is everything.

Why would you want a squirrel when you could have Mongoose vs. Cobra? Fools.

wow, that's super morbid. ick! though some of them are pretty neat looking, I couldn't have something like that in my house. yeck.

Is the third hind leg an addition or an accident of nature? Either way, it's kinda creepy.

yeah ... pretty morbid. i have a pretty high morbidity threshold, but i can't get on board with dead animals as art.

I think squirrels are some of the most beautiful things I can watch from my dining room table - but they're beautiful because they are so agile and playful.

A dead squirrel would just be a downer.

and to think people are starving while Lord Yuppie demands a 450 dollar stuffed rat

Taxidermy always makes me think of Norman Bates.

So, in other words, hell no.

I'd much rather just eat 'em, like the British do: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/dining…. And I suppose the extra leg prevents the family of five from fighting over who goes without one.

taxidermy is great. I don't see a problem with preserving an otherwise thrown away animal. so that it could be appreciated maybe for the first time in its existence. i love the griffin!

Wasn't there a show like this a few years ago at Soil or Pound or Platform? In the show, in addition to eerily taxidermied squirrels, were some birds and ferrets, I think. They were often "spliced" with fake grapes and twigs, etc. Does anyone remember the show? If so, can you post it? If so, thank you.

Ahem, on the subject of taxidermy- I think it is ridiculous. Are these animals not appreciated enough when they are alive and wild? Would any of you be comfortable with a taxidermized (word?) cat, dog, grandmother, hobo, toddler, carpenter, school teacher, doorman, airline pilot, security guard, secretary, CEO, banker, politician in your home, office, bar or lodge?? I doubt it. If you're down with taxidermy you should be down with it for ALL mammals, not just big and small furry critters. Siiigh
