One Of the Country's Great Newspapers...

Posted by on Mon, May 4, 2009 at 10:27 AM

...may be about to close one of the country's great newspapers, as ECB noted in Morning News. This is the detail that blows my mind:

The company paid $1.1 billion for The Globe in 1993, the highest price ever paid for a single American newspaper, and it was highly profitable through that decade.

From $1.1 billion to essentially worthless in 16 years.

The Stranger will go under within a year. Keep up the faggy buttfuck stuff and wimpy white-guilt liberal stuff though!

Gah! That would be brutal, if the Globe were to close. Boston being a one-paper town is one thing; the Herald being that paper is another, unimaginable, thing altogether.

Good point. Sadly, at least so far, the paper that's gone under in both Denver and Seattle has been the better one. It makes no sense to me.

@1: The Stranger won't go under with other newspapers because the Stranger is not a newspaper. It's the newsletter of a community development organization. (And people who accuse the Stranger of conflicts of interest in its promotions are missing the point.)

Oh, shit. The Globe is a fine newspaper. I'll be really sorry to see it go.

And the NYT expects anyone to place any credence in what it thinks about business in America?
That's a good one!
