Reading Tonight

Posted by on Fri, May 1, 2009 at 10:32 AM

7754/1241198158-51d3cu_mw-l._sl500_aa240_.jpgTwo readings tonight.

Up at Third Place Books, Lancer Kind, Camille Alexa & Elizabeth Kate Switaj read. They are the authors of books Ruins: Extraterrestrial, Ruins: Terra, and Ruins: Metropolis. The press release says these books are "about science fiction and archeology," which is to say it appeals to both Indiana Jones and Han Solo.

And at Benaroya Hall, David Sedaris reads. I watched him read last night* and he was hilarious. He came out swinging with a jaw-dropping riff on abortion and his stories involved kookaburras, transgendered priests, and the 2008 election. And also the kookaburra song, which is now stuck in my head. This is the reading of the night.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

* For those who are interested: After the show last night, I met the winner of the ticket giveaway that we hosted. Though I was still addled from my spring roll experience from the night before and was no doubt awkward and discomfort-making, I can tell you that she was a lovely, very pregnant human being who completely deserved those tickets. Also, she and her baby-makin' man are going to make a very attractive child together. And she didn't wet herself. So there.

The description of the Ruins books reminds me of the trilogy by Allen L. Wold: Jewels of the Dragon, Crown of the Serpent, and Lair of the Cyclops. Despite their sword and sorcery titles, they're definitely the "Indiana Jones in space" kind of books. I got two of them from my aunt back when they were still in print. I've probably read them all at least five times.

Dude, she totally stole from McSweeney's and you didn't catch it. Don't try to make it better by saying she was also purty.

And, FWIW...as the 2nd place finisher who had very good friends go ahead and purchase me tickets for my birthday last week...it was an amazing show. I laughed my ass off and got to eat brie, sushi and get drunk before hand. So neener.
