Lolo's Homemade Purell: A Timely Recipe

Posted by on Fri, May 1, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Our Dr. Golob says that lolo's homemade solution (in comments over here) will work just dandy:

I mixed 1 part dishwashing soap with 2 parts rubbing alcohol and it seems like it's close to the same stuff...

Apparently good old rubbing alcohol alone would be good enough, but it evaporates too fast: You need 10 seconds of wetness for it to work.

Purell's current tagline: "IMAGINE A TOUCHABLE WORLD." (Their website also happens to have a $2 coupon.) Surely Slog can do better for the tagline for Lolo's Homemade Hand-Sanitizing Panic-Reduction Solution...

Doesn't dishsoap need to be rinsed off? Seems to defeat the purpose; I just carry around a mason jar of Bacardi 151; soak your hands or pour into your favorite drink!

Purell is glycerin & rubbing alcohol. You can get glycerin at Rite-Aid, Walgreens, et al.

According to the esteemed Dr. Golob, and perhaps even C. Everett Koop, you really should use our sterile goop.

PCC also has glycerin-based liquid soap (with or without fragrance); mix that with some aloe vera and rubbing alcohol, and that's pretty much Purell, minus the carbomer thickener and added vitamin E.

But washing your hands for 10 seconds with warm water and plenty of regular soap or substitute (e.g. Dove) is really *just* as good at getting rid of germs from your hands. In fact, rubbing your hands under warm water for 10 seconds even without soap is pretty good, too.

You should probably be washing your hands after using brand name sanitizing lotion anyway. In fact, sanitizing lotion is never a replacement for washing your hands, and if you have the option you should be doing that, instead.

The problem @10 is that it's only *just* as good, as long as you have a way to dry them, preferably with towels. Leaving your hands wet for too long encourages growth. Touching knobs/handles/surfaces after washing with your wet hands is b-a-d. A little purell/substitute fixes this up nicely!

I like the intent of @9 "sterile goop" made me laugh.

So, who's got the straight poop on whether Purell does fuck-all against viruses? The FDA won't allow them to claim any anti-viral properties at all. Poking around the internet produces a lot of dumbasses but not a lot of hard data. My impression is, Purell doesn't do any good at all, and only vigorous, prolonged hand-washing removes viruses. Am I wrong? Dr. Golob?

Just light the rubbing alcohol on fire and it works fine.

(don't try this at home)

Since most rubbing alcohol is only 70%, and they say your sanitizer should be at least 60% alcohol, this recipe doesn't quite sound up to snuff.

I would say up the portion of alcohol or else buy the commercial stuff.
