A Run on the Market

Posted by on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 10:09 PM

From a hot tipper at swine@thestranger.com. (And here I was, thinking "swine@" was our general inbox address.)

You can't buy Purell around here. Bartell's on Rainier was sold out (except for travel samples), and so was Bartell's on Broadway & Pike. Though at the Broadway store, someone stashed five bottles behind the hand creams, and I found them! SNAP! I grabbed 2, then pointed them out to another customer, who bought 1. If you're quick there's still 2 left!

Yes, soap and water works, and so do wipes (though stocks on them were getting very low as well). Also, Lysol has a liquid foaming hand sanitizer that's stocked elsewhere in the store (household cleaning supplies, with the rest of the Lysol).

That's all... for now!

It's the "for now" that gets me. Am I ashamed that I just lugged my ass back from QFC with a giant boxful of canned food? No. I am not. That sweet corn would taste real nice next to a hunk of roasted Greenlake goose.

I'm totally thinking about buying some of that stuff. Sort of. Not really.

To tell the truth, I think going to a crowded store right now when I don't have a compelling reason to leave the house is a mistake. I can wait.

Right now I'm glad that I work from home and have no kids. Actually, I'm pretty happy about that every day, but it's particularly great at this moment in time...

I haven't felt a need to actually do anything differently because of this whole thing. Maybe wash my hands a bit longer than normal. And fill our water bottles, since I realized we don't have any emergency water in the house. But, both of those things are good things to do anyways...

Had dinner at Old Country Buffet on East Hill.

Feasted on pork steak, added a slice of ham and topped if off with some pork ribs.

If nothing else, this has finally made me get the non-perishable food/water I should have on hand in case of an earthquake.

Professor: "Yes I would, Kent."

Well, it sure makes masturbating a whole lot easier.

On Tuesday the Northgate Target had plenty of sanitizer. Not sure if they still do.

QFC on 15th had a decent amount of hand sanitizer last night. Today, I found two N95 masks under my sink. Fuck yeah, they're sitting on my coffee table for the impending flupocalypse!

I couldn't find any sanitizer either, but I mixed 1 part dishwashing soap with 2 parts rubbing alcohol and it seems like it's close to the same stuff. Is there any reason that wouldn't be as good?

If you all are concerned, and NEED the purell...go to Staples or Office Depot. People don't think to go there, but they normally have it in stock.

QFC had $0.50 Hormell Chili, and my recent-college-student instincts prompted me to fill the cart with them. That was last weekend, before we knew we were all going to die, so, hurray intuition.

would be curious to have DOCTOR Golob weigh in on hand sanitizers. I feel like antibacterial soaps will be the eventual downfall of humanity. Give me some good ol fashioned soap and water!

anyone else?

I wouldn't say that I'm panicked, but I sure would feel more comfortable having a bit of sanitizer on me when my 4 year old daughter and I get off of the bus. Soap and water just isnt' that convenient to use midtransit. May those of you who thinks this is not prudent get sneezed on by the boar from the brilliant movie Razorback.

Alcohol and dish soap - I think the commercial sanitizers are likely a mix of 70% rubbing alcohol and glycerin. Just guessing.

I don't see why straight alcohol wouldn't be effective in spite of the evaporation. Just carry a small plastic bottle in the car or purse.

Google medical supplies/sanitizers and you'll find quite a trove of sanitizer dispenser systems for work and home. One is perfect for kids. It's a little plastic bottle on a neck cord. And these are typically NOT alcohol based antibacterials.
