Today in Right-Wing Moonlighting

Perhaps you already knew this but I did not: Rockstar Energy Drink—designed to help you "party like a rock star"—is the creation of right-wing radio host Michael Savage.

Details come from TheTruthAboutRockstar.com: Not only did Michael (Weiner) Savage—who apparently holds advanced degrees in medical botany—come up with the formula for Rockstar, he fathered its CEO: Russel Weiner, who offers this quote:

I was was very fortunate to have been raised by two of the leading herbalists in the world, Dr. and Mrs. Michael Weiner Ph.D... My family has taken that spirit and experience - their lifetime journey - and developed the most complete, most unique, most powerful, and most honest energy beverage ever created: Rockstar.

Clearly, the "most honest energy beverage ever created" could only have sprung from the mind of Michael Savage, who's so honest he classifies homosexuality as "child abuse," says the idea of gay marriage "makes him puke," and famously told a gay caller to "get AIDS and die." Read more here.

In other moonlighting right-wing loony news: Histrionic Fox freak Glenn Beck is doing a stand-up comedy tour! Unfortunately, he's not coming anywhere near Seattle, so we'll have to make do with the brilliantly funny teaser for Beck's previous comedy show.

Thanks for the heads-up, Gawker.

Yeah, Savage is a douche and all but I certainly can't boycott rockstar. What the hell am I supposed to put in the girly shots I love to drink so much?

"....and famously told a gay caller to "get AIDS and die." "

Is that anything like Dan saying that Black Women deserve to get AIDS because they don't support gay marriage?

@1 Monster? Red Bull? There are a litany of other ones. Unfortunately, Rock Star is the best tasting of them.

Thanks for the heads up, Schmader. Chalk another substance to dead.

Wow, I had no idea of the Michael savage - rockstar connection. I'll have to tell all my friends.

Funny story: when I first started reading Savage Love, I had a late evening commute. While surfing the dial, I heard Michael Savage's show - and not remembering Dan's first name, mistook him for Dan. I thought he was schizo for a while, until I realized my mistake.

Savage might be the greatest troll ever. There is some reason to believe he just figured out that saying crazy shit equals money and has been running with it. I mean in his youth the guy hungout with beatniks and was pretty much a hippy. Then he discovered talk radio.

There are so many energy drinks on the market it shoudn't be too hard to find a substitute. It doesn't surprise me in the least that Michael Savage tried to cash in on the energy drink craze. He probably smokes meth and drinks a dozen Rockstars before he spouts his bullshit on the radio.

Does anybody else find it odd that the son referred to his parents as "Dr. and Mrs. Michael Weiner Ph.D"? The mom doesn't get a first name? I mean, I know that's traditional "etiquette" on things like wedding invitations, but, when referring to people in conversation? Especially your parents?

@7 What concerns me is that it was on the backs of liberals that Rock Star really started. It was mass popular among the Burner community in 2001/2002. If they had known...

I learned about the Michael Savage-Rockstar connection about a year ago, and haven't had a drop since. There are a million energy drinks out there to consume instead.

More weird/interesting facts about M. Savage: he was Timothy Leary's gatekeeper during the acid experiments. He was friends, and corresponded with, Alan Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, expressing quasi-gay sentiment in some of the letters, and taking nekkid pics of Ginsberg (I think - don't quote me on that). He was a full-on beatnik hippie type, rolling with poets and getting multiple superdegrees in herbalism.

He claims all along he was a sorta-secret conservative, but I wonder what happened to make him sooooo vile. My guess? MONEY.

The dude truly is Darth Vader. Fuck him, and fuck Rockstar.

Fascinating - the Glen Beck trailer uses the same intro music that the Savage Lovecast used to use!

The folks at The Stranger need to come up with an energy drink. "Slog, party like an alternative publication writer."

@3 BLASPHEMY! Red Bull is by far a superior product in taste and energizing capability.

2: Yeah, that would be bad. If I'd said such a thing, which I did not. I'm also not alone in pointing out that the homophobia in the African American community that created the down low is literally killing black women, which is a tragedy. That's not wishing death on anyone; that's wishing people could let go of their hatred so that fewer people will get sick and die.

Thank you for playing Slog.

@13 Both 5 Hour Energy Drink and Monster are better at energizing. Fortunately, I like Blue Monster, and 5 Hour is just a tiny shot of vileness (easy to down).

I think you waste your time answering such drivel.
But keep informing everybody else, we love you for it.

@4, Michael "Savage" sounds far, far more queer than Dan ever did on the radio -- the more he angrily lisps about the pervert gays all over his hometown "San Fran-sicko", between fussing over his lapdog, the more fruity and unintentionally hilarious his show gets.

I like the coffee/Java Monster brand energy drink, and amp is ok, but it's pretty much just supercharged Mt. Dew.

Why doesn't Jones Soda to make an energy drink? They are a cool local company and they would probably make a killing off of it.

That's conservatives for you, using language and honorifics that went out of fashion decades ago.

Herbalism my ass. Herbal speed, more like. Sugar, caffeine and guarana; it doesn't take multiple degrees to figure that out. You're better off drinking piss.

@20, didn't Jones Soda just almost go out of business with their soda in cans debacle? They should probably stick to what they can manage to do for awhile.

14 An arrogant ignorant A hole if there ever was one. And then some people still ask why is it that he is viewed as harboring enmity against African americans. There's why. The black community doesn't owe you nor your loved gay groups nothing Mr Savage and the d-low phenomenon is not something endemic to the African ameircan community it's more prevalent in the white community but you rarely hear about it until a Larry Craig comes out tapping his way into the news. Gay lobby groups and individuals such as yourself just like to bring this up to shame the black community into accepting and supporting your ideology but what you seem to forget is that we have a sense of values enshrined in our community and we have cherished our family cohesion way before our ancestors came to these shores in bondage. It's only when a few individuals have deviated from this and adopted your ideology that we have seen an affliction visited upon our community not the other way around Mr Savage. Stop your disinformation (ignorance) and vitriol against African Americans.

Shame on you!

Rockstar is one of the few ones out there that doesn't use High Fructose Corn Syrup.

And it's website address is rockstar69.com, so you know it's fucking bad ass brah! (get it? when you drink rockstar, you're gonna get laaaiiiidddd!!!!1")

"but what you seem to forget is that we have a sense of values enshrined in our community and we have cherished our family cohesion way before our ancestors came to these shores in bondage."

Is that why less than 20% of African-American children grow up in two parent homes?

This is what you call family cohesion? I mean I can really give a shit but you just seem like a total asshole. So.

If your gonna call out the fags I'm gonna call you out on your bullshit.

It is Black Women's fault that they get AIDS because they disapprove of homosexuality?
Not because homosexual men lie to them and infect them with the virus?

Which is saying that they deserve to get AIDS because they disapprove of homosexuality.

to be fair, it is Michael Savage's son that is the CEO of the company. I have no idea what his politics are, for all I know they could be completely opposite of his father's.
