Maybe Four Bucks Really Is Dumb

Posted by on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 3:43 PM

Says the NYT:

Starbucks Corporation said net income fell 77 percent in its second quarter offering further proof that consumers are continuing to cut back on everyday luxuries.

The Seattle-based coffee company reported net income of $25 million, or 3 cents a share, compared to $108.7 million, or 15 cents a share, in the year-ago second quarter.

The Americano I'm drinking right now didn't come from McDonalds or Starbucks.

You don't have to spend $4. I get a tall Tazo tea for only a buck and half.

Consumers are continuing to cut back on over-roasted shit coffee.

But it was probably still over 2 dollars, yes? Congratulations?

And an Americano costs about 2 bucks. You're only going to pay out the butt if you order a ridiculous froufy drink, and then you deserve it.

maybe high grade beans, grind and use in the office drip rig (add a pinch of salt) is VERY good and very cheap

sorry $4.00 coffee vendors

given a spending choice I will do home brew coffee and ice cream at the new place - and maybe home made ice cream is next

It's important for us all to save our coffee money now, so we can afford the Starbux prices when the inflation hits.

Good job thinking ahead, America!

Good one Bettina. You can save even more by going with Drip, ya now.

French Press is the only way to go - tastes way better than drip, even with the same coffee & grind, and there's less waste since you only make the amount you want to drink.

The best espresso in the world is medalia d'Oro and you can buy it by the can for a few bucks at QFC.

http://www.redbagcollection.com/medaglia…

In fact, its one of the best decorated cans in the world!

We make our own from fair-trade beans at Trader Joes.

@10: the best-decorated can in the world, by far, is Cafe Bustelo, design icon of Dominican/Puerto Rican New York City. Four bucks a can, too.

I worked at least part time at Starbucks for most of the 90s. It was a fun second job and I'd save most of the money for vacations and other extras while my "real" paycheck went to rent/food/savings, etc.

One pefectly nice teenage girl bought a double mocha from me every morning, paid with $3 and put the change in the tip jar. Came back for a triple grande mocha in the afternoon, paid with $5, gave us the change.

I realized she was spending more in a year on mochas than my three weeks in Europe cost me every year!

To this day, I buy a foofy drink about twice a year and enjoy brewing all my other coffees at home and I'm really amazed it's taken this long for everyone else (according to the media, anyway) to catch up with me! But I'm glad it's happened.

Like most others commenting here, I think that the $4/cup language is just hyperbole; it is perfectly possible to get a decent cup of coffee at Starbucks for under $2, especially if you have your own travel mug.

It is definitely lower quality than most good independent coffee shops. However, I travel by interstate a LOT, and Starbucks is a fricking savior. I can be reasonably sure that I will get a decent (not excellent) cup of coffee anywhere, anytime, rather than have to sink to truckstop spit-swill. Unfortunately, I cannot really seek out every local indie coffeehouse from a ten minute interstate stop. And McDonalds cannot touch Starbucks; their attempt at "gourmet coffee" is still terrible.

So yeah, Starbucks has a place for coffee lovers, even cheap ones.

Make espresso in a stovetop espresso pot, heat milk in a pot and foam with a hand blender.

I love my morning latte.

Subjective arguments about taste aside, are you implying that prices are lower at Vivace or any other independent coffee shop?

Because they're not.

And those who feel the need to extol the virtues of roasting their own beans, French presses, etc.: Do you ever leave your house? Assuming you work outside the home, do you go home for your coffee breaks? Do you meet friends for coffee in your kitchen?
