Schmidt is so dreamy, even though he's an operative.

#3 is right, folks are really jumping the gun on this. I mean, weren't we bemoaning the decline of the Democrats after the 2004 election?

I retract comments saying the Speecter shift is great. On reflection, they should have let him die in his primary so that a real Democrat like Sestak would take that seat against a right winger like Toomey.

this deal was arranged by Biden and Specter in a typical insider fashion. The shift of Specter isn't really going to change his vote on anything. In all the hoopla, we didn't hear one pipsqueak form him about health care, for instance. Obama should be organizing the grass roots, building long term party strength, not just widening the tent over to people like Specter. Or, at a minimum, welcome him to the party but do not try to "clear the field" for him in the primary.

There's no such thing as a real "Republican" in Massachusetts. Every one of them will insist that they are really a Libertarian, They only *vote* Republican.

People said the same thing about the Dems a scant few years ago. These things can change pretty quickly when people don't like whats going on. For example 94 and 06.

@5: But in order to win as a Democrat he's going to have to show that he supports the party, and that will likely mean him falling in line a little bit. He's going to want to keep his committee seats, too. He's going to have to defeat a dyed-in-blue dem in the primary, and he can't do that in the Northeast as a DINO.

We've reached the stage of the narrative where the GOP has just been consumed in a tanker fire.
