Congrats, Dr. Science

Posted by on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Our very own Jonathan Golob—of Dear Science infamy—is officially a really real doctor.

Dr. (!!!) Golob presented his thesis to a bunch of scientists at UW this morning.

Since most of you missed it, I'll share some key phrases:

"Beta-catenin binding site," "signal effectors," "pluripotent" and my favorite: "the beta-fatina is within the human first intron"

I understood none of it. Except for "wedge block." That I got. But I'm sure it was brilliant!

Congratulations, Dr. Science.

Congratulations! Now, pull on that rubber glove and check my prostate, Doc.

What part did the stripey sweater play in your defense? Or -- I gotta ask this -- are those acid-wash jeans?

Congrats! I wonder if this means we'll be seeing more or less of Dr. Science at The Stranger. I miss the podcasts.

Congrats to Jon. The Slog contingent included Jonah, Original Monique, Fleshy Man Toy and myself, all huddled against the back wall of the Orin Smith Auditorium at the UW Medicine Center off Mercer.

The title of the dissertation was Mechanisms of Cell Fate Acquisition in the Differentiation of Pluripotent Stem Cells, a series of words that is still as digestible as carrots after the hour-long presentation. But Dr. Jon Golob was pretty good at interrupting key points with "and this is the important part," which helped me gather the following:

The good doctor presented a new understanding for how DNA translates into RNA, which is a manner entirely different than how RNA synthesizes into protein--that there's an intermediate step between the cell's "off" and "on" state when producing RNA that has, so far, been indiscernible. Considering that stem cells essentially hold all the DNA information for producing every kind of cell in the human body, locking down and understanding this initial process brings us one step closer to eventually creating genetic super-freak monsters like Dr. Manhattan.

How wrong is my super-basic summary, doc?

Also, the blurry photo shown is from the intro bit where Golob's thesis supervisor told his life story. Bring the beard back!

Congratulations, Dr. Golob. If I lived in Seattle and you had one, I'd happily sign up for your practice. As I don't live in Seattle, it's a moot point anyway.

Not only is the good doctor styish, but his professor showed us that the ladies can't resist him! (all of which are very important details to the Mechanisms of Cell Fate Acquisition in the Differentiation of Pluripotent Stem Cells)

Congrats again Golob, it was an honor to watch your presentation and see you impress just about every professor so they could barely formulate questions! Bravo!

Congratulations and well-deserved, Dr. Golob!

Now pretty please can we have a new podcast about the imminent pandemic?

Oh, dammit, I kept seeing the fliers for that posted all over the Health Sci center for the last week, and today is the day I have to be out sick.

Well, congrats, Golob.

I'll add my congratulations to the list.

Dr. Golob - has a nice, sort of "Star Trekky" kind of ring to it.

And I'm guessing "wedge block" does not in fact have anything whatsoever to do with cheese...

I never managed to extract any special privleges out of my membership; if you figure out how, let me know.

Was choosing a stem cell-related topic Jonathan's way of flipping the bird a little bit at the anti-choice crowd? If so, good for you. And congratulations! One of the happiest days of my life was when I passed my big, bad, scary thesis defense.
