A Weird Thing That Happened to Me on a Bus Tour of Vancouver Yesterday

Posted by on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 9:21 AM

Tour Guide: "On your left here you can see St. Paul's Hospital. It's the oldest hospital in Vancouver, and a leading research facility in HIV and AIDS. Or, if you don't want to get involved with the whole HIV and AIDS thing, Scotty from Star Trek? The original Star Trek, the show? He was born here!"

People on Bus: "Ooooooooh!"

I would have paid good money to be on a bus tour of Vancouver with Lindy West. Talk about surreal.

Reading into it too much perhaps? Unless you aren't.... But my guess is that the tour guide was saying, basically, "maybe you don't want to think about a really horrible disease and instead would like to know about some really neat trivia!"

I seem to recall Scotty getting in trouble on shore leave a few times and Doc McCoy having to help him out with that. I suppose Space VD is more interesting than the Terran forms.

So, what happened? Did you get involved with the whole HIV and AIDS thing?

James "Scotty" Doohan lived in Redmond for years and years and raised some kids there. He was the most likely minor celebrity to run into at random on the Eastside, whether buying Scotty action figures at Toys R Us in Bellevue or just shopping at the QFC in Redmond.

6 I once ran into Scotty as I was sprinting out of the QFC with my "purchase" of red wine.

Given that it's world-renowned, they probably could have played up the research angle a bit more positively. But, hey, I didn't know that about Doohan - I'll have to go take a photo. =)

St. Pauls may eventually also become famous for collapsing on and killing all the patients inside- the plan is to discard it in favour of a new facility because a needed siesmic upgrade isn't practical, but who knows how many years it will be before that happens? Maybe in 30 years, after we pay down the Olympic debt.
