NFL Draft Open Thread

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Detroit takes QB Matthew Stafford with the first pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

I'll sporadically update. Discuss/gripe away in the comments.

T Jason Smith is a St. Louis Ram

The Kansas City Chiefs make the first surprise pick of today's draft, picking up DE Tyson Jackson.

The Seahawks are on the clock

Monster LB Aaron Curry is a Seahawk!

The Jets trade up for the Browns' 5th pick and take QB Mark Sanchez.

Cincinnati takes Alabama OT Andre Smith.

Oakland makes a crazy pick and takes WR Darrius Heyward-Bey way higher than he was projected.

OT Eugene Monroe is a Jaguar.

DT B.J. Raji is a cheese head.

Due to technical issues and catastrophic car stereo installation problems, I'm going to direct you to Fieldgulls for further draft coverage. I'll be back later to assess things. So far, I'm excited about the Curry pick. I know a LB probably wasn't our biggest need, but taking a low risk pick when we need to rebuild seems to make some sense.

Trading Julian Peterson for a solid run stuffer in Cory Redding, and then picking the best linebacker in the draft? Wow, it almost seems like the Seahawks' management has actually thought this through.

How bout them Dawgs!

(fyi the term 'Dawg' is only appropriately used to refer to the Georgia Bullgogs)

ESPN is scooping themselves. They kill the suspense of the pick announcement by finding out who is getting picked a few minutes earlier (shots of players getting the phone call), using what, 47 commentators? They are so shitty.

Fucking Al Davis.

When old people lose their wits, they get their drivers license taken away. Why not their NFL team too?

The NFL Network is streaming their coverage online. It's way better than Berman, Kiper & Co.

Aaron Curry seems like a cool guy. He'll be a good designated driver for Tatupu and Leroy Hill.

I know nothing about football, really, except what I read in books. Where did Michael Oher (star of "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game" by Michael Lewis) go? Is he still considered good? Is he 400 lb. yet?

I like the curry pick and I think the Hawks make a sly maneuver out of it as Mathil69 says. Oher went to the Ravens, which is a solid place for him to go. I'll be pulling for him. Hopefully Oher has a better go of it than Jeremy Brown, Michael Lewis' subject in Moneyball, who suddenly ended up retiring prior to Spring Training in 2008 for "personal reasons" after playing in five big league games.

Best hawks draft in, like, forever. That center from OR is sick too.

great day for the hawks yall..but al davis steals the show with his insane pick. raiders are doomed and that is a good thing.

Raiders won't be good again until Al Davis dies, and evil old men like him and Dick Cheney live forever.

Thanks for Crabtree, from a 49ers fan.

It'll be interesting, kebabs, how the qb gets it going with his wrs in San Fran next year. I had secret high hopes for Bryant Johnson coming over from Arizona last year. Looked like he ended up in Martz's doghouse, though their qb situation wasn't that great for any receiver last year. I'd love to see Niners' decent defense play better together and give a stronger effort next year, too.
