My Favorite Blog Today

Posted by on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 5:08 PM

5e32/1240597214-237746.full.gifRoasted Peanuts is chronologically following the evolution of Charlie Brown from the very first strip (above).

This is, to my mind, a near-perfect execution of the blog as something that no other medium can really do well: A progressing, diary-like structure that examines something huge. The idea of blogging Peanuts is a mammoth undertaking in terms of both time and space. If you've ever liked Charlie Brown, or want to understand the appeal of Charlie Brown, you should check out the blog.

(Thanks to Slog tipper Clinton.)

I enjoy the blogs that try to link the present and the past. One of my recent favorites is the Orwell Diaries:

thanks for the tip. It's kind of funny because I just started reading Schulz today to distract myself after having my wisdom tooth taken out.

I hate The Peanuts, mostly because everyone acted like it was funny, when really it was about humiliation and depression. I'll actually be interested to see this blogged, though.

Dude seems awfully preoccupied with the size of characters heads. I've read a few of his posts, and his observations strike me as pretty banal and uninsightful.

My seven-year-old says that Lucy Van Pelt grew up to be Lucille from "Arrested Development."

Charles Schultz was THE most insightful psychologist of the 20th century - and it was all intuitive.

He deconstructed white male privilege long before the condition had even been diagnosed, and he also captured the free-floating angst of those who didn't measure up to the version of manhood that prevailed at the time.

Sparky taught us how to get in touch with existential atavistic playground fears that never go away.

I don't at all agree that a blog is the best medium for this. A Flash animation, complete with a sliding timeline and other interface features designed by people far more creative than I, would be far superior.

#8: Or you could, as I did, check out the entire library of Peanuts cartoons year-by-year from KCLS:
