I Leave Town for One Week...

Posted by on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 12:56 PM

And Jan Drago says she's considering a run for mayor??

My guess is that Jan was blowing smoke. She hasn't raised any money since last year (a $111 contribution in December '08); she only has $243 in the bank; she's 68; and her pro-business, downtown establishment base is identical to Nickels's. Finally, and not unimportantly,Seattle hasn't elected a female mayor since 1926, when Bertha Knight Landes ousted the sitting mayor, Dr. Edwin J. "Doc" Brown, in a landslide.

Seattle can elect a female Mayor. Martha Choe would have beaten Schell in 97 in a walk. That said, Jan would not be an ideal candidate for a number of reasons, least of all her gender.

She could raise money if she had to.

Besides, this is what you get when you miss the discussions in the back of the room.

People who are very close to her say she is tired and just wants to spend time with her family. There is no way that she is running. Crosscut probably made it all up.

It's so ridiculous that we haven't had a female mayor in so long. Every time a mayoral vote comes up I am a little ashamed of Seattle. I would definitely vote for Jan Drago in the current field. Yes, a candidate's gender is an important consideration as it can have an important effect on the culture of a city, amongst many other reasons.

@4/5: This is not going to turn into a Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama thing again is it?

I mean would you vote for Ann Coulter? She has two X chromosomes.

I'll have to grab a couple of bottles of wine from the QFC and ponder that one....

Yeah, Seattle's so fucking sexist. What with putting two women in the US Senate and another in the Governor's mansion.

Drago is considering a run. While she would be a good mayor, she doesn't have the personality to win in this election. She's an excellent politician, (i.e she's decisive and knows how to push her agenda effectively), but she isn't charismatic enough to beat this incumbent.

@1: I don't know about that--people still liked Paul Schell in 1997.

@Everyone else: Erica's right--ain't gonna happen

@4
what effect?

More listening, more process, making sure everyone feels valued and respected, putting relationships first as a priority instead of a just get 'r done mentality?

Isn't that what we got already????????

Now that's the kind of ECB that's been missing!

huh?

What a stupid post; if a man had wrote that Jan Drago couldn't win as mayor because she's too old, too poor and a woman, ECB's blood pressure would rise, she'd start foaming at the mouth and more than likely, she'd drop the bottle of $9.99 red wine she was drinking from...

ECB,
Careful with those words there, ECB. Your job is to shoplift and flak for the council, not lash them with savage wors like "blowing smoke." So mean!

And isn't Drago the council lioness you've celebrated for standing up to the mayor?
