American Terrorism

Posted by on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 10:58 AM

The new terror begins:

BOSTON — State police and security officials say a U.S. Marine was arrested Sunday morning at Boston's Logan International Airport after screeners found bomb-making materials, a gun and ammunition in his checked baggage.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis says 22-year-old Cpl. Justin Reed, of Jacksonville, N.C., was booked on US Airways Flight 877 to Charlotte, N.C. Davis says Reed arrived in Boston on a flight from Las Vegas earlier Sunday morning.

Davis says the TSA is trying to determine why the items were not detected during a screening in Las Vegas.

State police at Logan were notified about the items by the TSA screeners.

Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine and possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport. Bail was set at $50,000.

If this guy had been an Arab, they would have flown him to some secret place, tortured him, and detained him indefinitely. Setting bail at just $50,000 for an apparent domestic terrorist is a fucking insult.

Thanks to Nick for the tip.

Napolitano will now demonstrate what backpedaling from backpedaling looks like.

"I mean, okay, we didn't mean to specifically mention vets and servicepeople, but that's what our info said specifically, but I lack the spine to confront them, even though that's what our data said, and erm, ah, it was confirmed for us."

I thought she was going to be tough, but backpedaling and having a story like this come out immediately afterward? Oh, classy.

on the plus side, at least tsa is actually apprehending terrorists amid all the stupid harassment of harmless folks.

@2, you mean at least the TSA is actually apprehending terrorists on every second flight they take while holding bomb-making materials.

The TSA is the most useless form of security out there, sending nothing but the impression of security to idiots who feel safer after being forced to take off their shoes.

Most stuff makes it thru, actually.

They're not that good at detection.

Charles,
I don't believe if he (the Marine corporal) was of Arab heritage that he would have been shipped to "some secret place" to be "tortured" especially under this Obama Administration. I do believe there are two fucking insults here, the Marine corporal and the TSA employee(s) allowing such materials on the flight from Las Vegas. They should be fired.

How did that nut in Jamaica get a gun on board? Somebody needs to do their job better in Canada as well.

The new admin. has announced the closure of secret detention centers. We will have to wait and see how foreign-born suspects or prople of ethnicities other than white are treated in similar situations in the near future.

"Infernal machine" sounds very Steampunk - are we sure this guy isn't working for Dr. Miguelito Loveless?

@6
My grandma once brought a loaded pistol on a plane in her purse. She completely forgot she even had it there. It wasn't until she was at her hotel room that she even noticed it.

Stuff definitely gets through.

It's way too soon to jump to these sorts of conclusions. Guns/ammo are legal as checked baggage, and the press has been very vague about what "bomb-making materials" were involved, probably because the government isn't saying much either. I'll wait to pass judgment until I know a few more details.

Good clarification. I didn't know that. You prove Mark Twain's axiom "Rumour goes around the world before the truth has a chance to put its boots on". However, I am apprehensive about allowing any weaponry and ammunition on any flight even in checked baggage. Evidently, it is allowed.

Yup, I have traveled with guns and ammunition in my checked baggage after 9/11, and here's how you can too:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/a…

Note that you will be asked to discreetly show what you're carrying to the counter clerk at check in. He will red tag your bags, but tuck the red tag into the case, so it can't be seen.

Go figure.

#8. The hijacker in Jamaica forced his way onto the aircraft from the ground. He never went through security, or Canada for that matter.

I adore the name "infernal machine." It sounds like something an old coot like Ted Stephens would say in reference to a simple device like an answering machine or VCR - "You goddamned infernal machine!!!" - right before hollering at the kids to get off his lawn.

Isn't infernal machine the name of a 4/20 event where you vaporize something?

Actually, better yet - a VHS tape rewinder. Did anyone else's grandma have one of those? "Rewinding wears out the VCR!"

but no outrage for Obama, who has refused to prosecute torturers in violation of international law. when we know they tortured and when he's president and shit and um, you know, like is in charge and shit?

Go figure.

It's the new Bush-Obama-Slog torture doctrine. ACT LIKE YOU CARE then give a pass.
Criticize CNN for a word miscue. Criticize TSA for looking dumb. But oh my god the last thing you will read on slog is direct criticism of the Bush-Obama-Slog torture doctrine which seems to be:

IT'S OKAY IF YOU GOT A LEGAL MEMO SAYING IT'S OKAY, FOLLOWED BY A PRESIDENT WHO WISHES TO LET IT GO FOR POLITICAL REASONS.

All that trumps:
law
international law
human rights
morality
consistency
change
hope and
unity.

OK, back to being outraged at how if TSA woulda hadda arab dude you know they woulda been all racist and shit, cuz, look here, they just stopped a white dude and gave him bail, so let's get all worked up about the presumed racism they woulda committed if they had, you know, and continue to ignore that our president RIGHT NOW IS AIDING TORTURERS AND LETTING THEM GET AWAY IN VIOLATION OF LAW.

If Bush were still president this would have been exploited as him preventing the 9/11. Obama is rational and will respond to the reality of the situation. I don't know how they could justify releasing this guy though. Maybe they know something and aren't making it public.

@23, before you pop a vein, you DO realize President Obama has signed an Executive Order discontinuing these practices, do you not?

And since one can presume the average CIA interrogator probably doesn't have a degree in Constitutional Law, recusing them from prosecution for carrying out an order that has yet to be judged illegal doesn't quite smack of the sort of Nuremberg-level atrocity you seem to want to make it.

Guns must be in a case and they must be tagged that they ar unloaded then checked by security to make sure they are unloaded. The next step is the hard case must be locked by the owner in front of security personel. ammo can only be checked using approved ammo containers it must be marked and locked. I hunt in the east and I carry my rifles and pistols back and forth. I see nothing wrong with traveling with weapons as long as its done correctly.

Hmm...

Seems like Napolitano is on the right track.

Can't believe that Republicans are criticizing her. That just weakens our security. And, for what? So Republicans can make pathetic and failed attempts to score political points with their brain-dead constituents?
