Time To Get Off the Computer, Right?

Posted by on Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 2:57 PM

It's a bad sign when you hear sirens—lots of sirens—and get up from your bed and go to the window and you look this way and that and don't see any fire trucks and you're just about to step away from the window and resume your nap when it occurs to you to look straight down and...

...that's when you see the ten fire trucks parked in front of your hotel and dozens of firemen carrying hoses and axes and air tanks rushing into the building, right?

No, it's time to stay on the computer. Anytime I hear the fire dept sirens in the neighborhood I pull up the seattle.gov 911 fire dispatch site to see where they're headed to. A few days ago they were headed for my intersection. So I wasn't surprised when they stopped right in front of my building. Get into the habit of checking the 911 fire info.

Stay where you are.

If you are no longer safe where you are in your building, exit. Take the stairs.

If the firefighters don't come for you and you're not being overcome with smoke or fire, you're most likely fine.

Feel free to bake the firefighters cookies or write them a note and deliver it to your local fire station. If you want, ask to see the Fire Engine. Bring your kid(s) if he’s well behaved. Someone will be thrilled to give you a tour.

Did the fire alarm not go off? Maybe they received a welfare check and opening the door with an axe is the only way to proceed? Seems farfetched, but it's still likely. Please be safe.

Bet you *now* you would have wished you'd gone back and retrieved that medicinal brownie when you had the chance.

I bet stroking some of that firemens' gear while hyper-sensitized would be really fab.

If in a tall building, best to stay put if the alarms haven't sounded, since it's at most going to affect 2 or 3 floors, and you'll make it harder for them to do their job.

It's only bad if they're not wearing their cute little uniforms and stylish hats. If you're lucky, maybe one will have to rescue you from the window and rub his sweaty body against yours as he helps you onto the ladder.

Well, if nothing else, it's a sign to freshen up. If you have to be rescued, you want to look your prettiest for the firemen.

The hook and ladder trucks can only reach the 7th floor. Please leave now, if you haven't already.
