One of Seattle’s Best Rehearsal Spaces Is Being Knocked Down for One of Seattle’s Best New Buildings

Posted by on Fri, Apr 17, 2009 at 3:30 PM

I’ve got a piece in this week’s news section that’s online only. It’s about Liz Dunn, one of the city’s leading preservationist and what she plans to do to one of her old buildings:

7e2a/1239997952-1424_11th_ave_weinstein_au_small.jpgA decade ago, Dunn purchased the Chop House, a practice space for musicians that occupies an old, two-story masonry building on 11th Avenue and East Pine Street. Since the mid-'80s, its 30 studios have served as rehearsal rooms for hundreds of bands, including the Presidents of the United States of America.

But now Dunn wants to build a 60-unit apartment building on the site.

The whole thing is over here.

It's a good thing the Stranger LOOOVVEEES Liz Dunn, because that's the sort of thing you'd otherwise get the community up in arms about.

this is such and obviuos candidate for a history building - part of the vivid and NW Music scene for years - artists in residence and playing

shit, who is this lady

and, who is she fucking to get her way? Dan, Domenic, get investigations, get the dirt... I love this building ... spent many nights stoned, hungry and naked there, all for MUSIC.

No outcry, shit, are you all asleep?

STOP this tear down at once!!!!

Is that the one across the street from the Wild Rose? I used to share a space in there. It was a treat and a rarity to have such a convenient space to play music in. I understand that practice spaces generally only exist in buildings that can't function as much else, but it's always sad to see'em go.

Neighbors of Capital Hill musicians, your lives are about to get a lot more annoying.

While it may have a lot of history, let's be clear: it was not a good rehearsal space, except for the fact that it was better than...nothing.

All Seattle commercial rehearsal spaces suffer from excessive bleed from surrounding rooms, poor ventilation and an overall dreary atmosphere. To be fair, the dreary atmosphere is because most musicians are dirtbag slobs, but still.

that building is a pit... but... uh.... you've got to have practice spaces. if you want bands to flourish in the neighborhood.

I rehearsed in the Chophouse from 1999 to 2003. It's a nasty building. It's great to have rehearsal space on Cap Hill, but it was never cheap. Back then we paid $600/month for a room. Any musicians out there who can tell us how much they're paying now?

In reality, it's not a pretty building and it would be way too expensive to seisimcally retrofit. I don't think there's much of a story here. Old buildings get torn down sometimes when they no longer make financial sense. Yeah, it'd be great to keep it around but if there's an old building to be torn down in that area this is a great candidate.
